No, George Washington never said any such thing. Utter BS.

Abe Lincoln never said that, either, but it makes sense now.

If we need God to know the difference between right and wrong we've got bigger things to worry about.

To clarify, we can go back and forth for ages without convincing each other of anything, so how about I just say that I respect your lifestyle and beliefs and then we can just agree to disagree.

I'm sure there are plenty examples of things that were once considered "right" and "wrong" by various church(es) that have gradually changed over the years as society has changed.. which I would think would basically show that society dictates what is right and wrong.. but I'm not much of a church historian

Unless you don't care what people think and move on. It is a persons choice to believe or not believe in god.

then that means bad things can be justified by saying "well he didn't have a choice to believe that"

I'm trying to avoid these arguments like this lately, trying to reduce my stress, so I'm going to give you my standard response to atheist ranting:

Astrophysicist Carl Sagan said, “An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who knows there is no god. By some definitions atheism is very stupid.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson, Big Think interview, "Consider also that in America 40% of American scientists are religious, so this notion that if you're a scientist that you're an atheist, or if you're religious that you're not a scientist, that's just empirically false. It's an empirically false statement."

Gregor Mendel (1822-1884), considered the father of genetics, was an Augustianinan friar and abbot of St. Thomas' Abbey in the Austrian Empire. Mendel discovered the basic principles of heredity through experiments in his monastery's garden. His experiments showed that the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants follows particular patterns, subsequently becoming the foundation of modern genetics and leading to the study of heredity.

Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976) was a German theoretical physicist and one of the key pioneers of quantum mechanics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1932. He was a Lutheran and a member of Germany's largest Protestant religious body, the Evangelische Kirche. He said, “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.”

The Big Bang Theory was first proposed by a Catholic. In 1927, the Belgian Catholic priest Georges Lemaître proposed an expanding model for the universe to explain the observed redshifts of spiral nebulae, and calculated the Hubble law. He based his theory on the work of Einstein and De Sitter, and independently derived Friedmann's equations for an expanding universe.

He didn't say it. That part is made up.

George Washington was Anglican according to MountVernon.org and he himself expressed little preference as to the religion practiced by the enslaved workers at Mount Vernon. Some were Christian. Others he allowed to continue their African religious traditions. He showed none of the self-righteous fundamentalism so prevalent in today's Christian society.

That's because the Bible is a collection of books written by different people. It is also divided between the Old and New Testaments, which plainly state that things in the New Testament replace things in the Old Testament. Some people are too busy trying to say "haha you're wrong" to actually pay attention to why there are contradictions.

The founding fathers, for the most part, we're religious and did believe God existed. It isn't a dumb thing to say, just a belief.

pretty sure GW was thinking in terms of godliness.
In his 1789 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, George Washington made abundantly clear exactly Whom America should thank, and why.
quote:
“it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor”

history proves him right.
Ungodliness, decadence, peccability, corrupt morals, sodomy, reprobacy has led to the downfall of numerous cultures and societies.
