It's true that cats and dogs evolved like this but many were due to humans forcing them. Such as ocelots and mountain cats that became the modern house cat all influenced by their looks and color.
Dogs come from the modern wolves some were naturally evolved like that and many were bred using the one with the better strengths that the breeder preferred. Very few like Chihuahuas and the Chinese Crest dog were evolved like that due to adaptation while some like Huskies, Shibas, and German Shepherds were already like that from wolves an only changed by a few things like color, size, and fur coat length.
