Part of the "Caravan" has already arrived at the border. There has already been violence, and illegal entries.

Funny thing: the military can't be used to stop a group of unarmed civilians from entering the country. The troops that have been deployed are just going to sit there and do nothing. Another winner initiative from the "fiscally responsible, rule of law" party!

The troops that were sent to the border are not combat troops but engineers. There are some MP's but they are there only to provide protection for the troops.

The troops are installing Concertina wire, providing helicopter support to transport border agents, reinforcing the wall and adding extensions. They are providing logistical support and freeing up Border Patrol to do their job. They are also installing advanced monitoring equipment.

So they are far from sitting around doing nothing.

The news now says they sent most of the troops to the Texas border. Which would make sense since all that caravan "news" was just for the easily influenced right before the midterms. A small group of troops, engineers like you said, went to San Diego. It baffles my mind that anyone still believes anything fox/trump has to say since it's been proven time and time again that they lie for profit.

The deployment makes perfect sense. Most of the engineers went to Texas because there is less protection in Texas. There are already major barriers in California and the western part of Arizona. The troops in Calif. are reinforcing what is already in place.

The troops themselves are not allowed to perform any police duties they can only provide logistic support.

Good question. I don't really know what they are protecting against, but everybody thinks NATO is still necessary. We currently have over 81,000 troops in Europe.

We have over 71,000 in Asia, and 26,000 in the Middle East.

81,000 troops in Europe is not needed. Both the UK and France have sufficient nukes to wipe Russia out ten times over if needed and both have capable militaries for most small scale engagements. I suspect the answer comes back to what Eisenhower warned of, there is money to be made in deploying and supporting such long term engagements.

Why does the US import oil and other goods that it can produce itself? I suspect that it has to do, to a degree, with maintaining a level of interdependence. The wars of the 20th century demonstrated the dangers of both isolationism and interventionism, but finding the right balance in a changing context is more art than science. Whatever the reasons or reasons, I agree that it seems unlikely to be for pure defense.

I agree with everyone being good citizens of the world, isolationism hurts everyone. However the reason the US imports oil is that not all the oil it produces is the right type. Oil comes in different categories, depending on its use. For other goods, normally the reason it is, it's cheaper from abroad, especially things like clothes and electronics.

Yeah, there is like light and heavy crude to keep it simple. The Saudis produce mostly light crude which is useful for gas and fuelling planes, hence why you import it. The US produces a mix and heavy crude is much more expensive to refine. However, the US is becoming so sufficient in gas they will start exporting huge quantities from 2019 from the south coast. A big earner for the oil and gas companies.
