I have no problem with a non violent protest but when you put yourself in a position like that where your message can get lost, it will! Should have done it off the field and would have probably gotten a better response and more traction towards their cause!

No...people would have objected to any thing black people do, and called them thugs. Mostly nonviolent black protests way overshadowed by angry black protests which were less frequent but got much more press. If police and courts become more fair and equitable in meting out justice for minorities, then the protests will have had their positive effect.

I actually mostly agree with you for once. The sensationalism from the press is what is driving all the animosity. And I fully agree that the judicial system needs an overhaul!

It may sound like a cliche, but I do have a lot of black friends. And they say they go places in their cars, or walking, where they have a right to be, and they get stopped by law enforcement for nothing, literally nothing. They also get refused service, or asked to leave unfairly. I have friends also who only get news from Fox, and when I am at their homes, I usually see clips of angry black protestors, angry black preachers, angry activists, etc. I can understand why people are polarized.
2 ups, 6y
I don’t know if it has anything to do with local.. I too have many black friends and we have had many a heated debate but in regards to being treated unfairly I think I can maybe count 1-3 instances where any one of them has said they were treated that way. I live in nj in a super affluent community and nothing like that is even an issue.

This form of protest is literally the DEFINITION of peaceful and respectful demonstration. But hey, maybe you prefer wanton destruction and mayhem in your protests? Personally, I think that the kneelers should find another way to make their statement because the current headline is that they are protesting the flag and the anthem. "Anthem Protesters" is the current nomenclature. They're protesting perceived racial bias in the justice and enforcement systems, and in certain RARE instances, they have a point, and people wind up dead who really should be alive today. They're not protesting American iconography, so they need to shift the nature of their protests to make sure the true message they wish to convey is heard.

NFL players were sitting during the anthem until a retired marine told them that it was disrespectful and that they should kneel instead.
1 up, 6y
Correct. Colin was originally sitting before the anthems as a peaceful demonstration, but he voluntarily changed his behavior to something more respectful (and encouraged others to do so as well). Now, though, there is too much talk about the action, and not enough about the message, meaning it's no longer a productive method, and something else should be found.

NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem is not disrespecting the flag. The flag stands for free speech. Actions like this which trip your personal emo inner child's triggers, do not necessarily equate to some truth which you'd like to see. Responsible humans question emotion or they're dishonest.

Why didn't they do it during the Obama years ? Our new 3 party system , Republican , Democrat and NeverTrumpers .
9 ups, 6y
Trump started making noise about it in September of 2017, a full year after the protests had started, and WELL AFTER THEY HAD PEAKED. In fact, until he made it an issue, most of the kneelers had stopped because they realized the furor had died away. So, Trump essentially fanned the flames and created drama.

speaking of logic, i'm curious in what way did the media "demand that we respect the flag" to honor a vet? and also in what way did they "celebrate" the NFL protest? is not automatically labeling it "disrespectful to the flag" considered a celebration? is filming it a celebration? what was there to celebrate?? i'm pretty sure nothing happened because of it except that Kaepernick has never played since and other players now have to risk getting fined if they want to continue it.

Some of the richest people in the country are protesting because the country is systematically against them and rigged for just white people? yet they are richer than more than 80% of the whites in the country and get to be paid millions for playing a GAME. They are spoiled, already overpaid athletes who just want more attention.
3 ups, 6y
Wait, are you saying that just because THEY'RE not getting a raw deal, they should ignore those that are? How horrible would this world be if everyone who wasn't suffering ignored everyone who was. You realize that kneelers are multi racial, right?

That's his own fault . He had a contract with the 49ers that he walked away from because they wouldn't guarantee a starting job .

Of course it is about the flag. Otherwise they would of protested on the off-season.

And before you say, "Who cares what celebs think?"...realize that you would make the same effort to sway the world to your opinions given half the opportunity. Most people would, which is why there are so many political memes on what's supposed to be a website filled with funny stuff...

But they dont protest during the offseason. Some of them get on award shows and bash president trump, but as far as a real protest. Nah.
The amount of players who kneel vs the Mount of players who protest during the off season.
Not even a discussion.
3 ups, 6y,
1 reply
You really need to do some more research. First off, the kneeling started before Trump was elected. Secondly, in week 1 of the 2017 season, only 8 players either knelt, sat, or held fists in the air during the anthem. It was dying off until President Trump cast more light on the actions, which gave them the voice they were seeking. Third, most of these peaceful demonstrators are vocal about their cause year in/year out (such as Eric Reid, Malcolm Butler, & Michael Bennett). However, they're now being asked their reaction to the latest thing Trump has said on the subject, and that's all that makes the headlines (which seems to be all that you read).

Seriously, do your homework.
1 up, 6y,

Seriously TODAY the only reason they do it is to bash trump.
Basically colin met a muslim DJ, married her, now he hates america.

Colin isn't in the NFL, and hasn't been for more than a year. So, other than the fact that he started the movement (prior to Trump becoming President!), his comments are null and void. I just gave you several examples of current year in/year out activists, and you give me someone who hasn't been in the game for quite awhile.

Just LOOK a little: ericreid35.com (he created a foundation for this very thing...he promotes it, gives speeches, etc.), malcolmjenkins27.com (he created a foundation, has worked with police forces and congressmen for reform, etc.), Michael Bennett has been vocal for awhile and freaking wrote a book! This took me barely any time to look up.

I'm beginning to doubt that you're willing to do any research yourself, and just searching for the other voices in your echo chamber...

Oh so 4 or 5 players out of hundreds.
Point taken....
F**king idiot.
2 ups, 6y
No, just the ones that came instantly to mind, difference makers at their positions. ALSO, I only took a couple of minutes, and found all of that. ALSO, these were in the handful of guys who were continuing to protest at the start of the 2017 season, before Trump made it the issue it is today. ALSO, hundreds of players aren't protesting.

There's a lot you have to ignore to make your statement above.

Shut the f**k up.
You hate America I get it.
2 ups, 6y
Actually, I truly love this country, and I suggest that the players move to something else that is more consistent with their actual concern, which in RARE instances is warranted (and in those instances, we often enough have dead people who didn't deserve to die. You don't bounce back from death).

I can love this country without agreeing that it is completely faultless. Wasn't that Trump's whole platform, fixing the problems in America. Make America Great AGAIN?

Youd think if they believed in this so much they'd protest outside of football. The fact that you think the only form of protest is taking a knee is ridiculously funny to me.
You have a special kind of mental disorder.

1 up, 6y
Protests are supposed to be public events, noticeable to all. Pro football players get cameras pointed at them for football games, so it's easy for them to make a very public display (they get mileage out of it). When they do other things, the cameras tend to be missing, so it's much harder to get any traction. It doesn't make headlines, so people like you don't hear about it. There's a reason this is the most recognizable version of protesting in the US, and here we are talking about it!

Since this meme is specifically about anthem kneeling, I'm not sure why you're so hung up on the other types of protesting in which many of them DO currently engage.
1 up, 6y
2 ups, 6y,

actually several of them have worked in their communities to help others in the off season. The protests are when they can be seen, which is the point of the protests. It's to say that the people they represent are not being granted the same level of freedom and safety in the criminal justice system.
1 up, 6y,

And that's what they should be doing helping.
If you didnt read what I said I'll say it again.
They dont PROTEST during the offseason, only during tv time, when it's time to disrespect the flag.
Cmon fella keep up.
1 up, 6y
Many (not several, not few) DO protest in the off season. It doesn't take long to research and find this out. Truth is truth, regardless of your opinion of it...
