Many of them are:
- unhappy about how much they've accomplished relative to their age
- feel too much pressure to succeed
or
- unhappy about their current position in life (marriage, job, etc.)
At least that's how I feel when I want to be a negative nancy

I have seen many comments lately that don't even make sense. They are just spamming weird stuff. I can't even tell if they are actually even trolling.
Maybe I'm a little behind the times. Can anybody tell me what a troll is? I'm sure they're probably something other than the mythical creature of yore.

they are people on the internet who get joy by causing anger and frustration in others. On a site such as this, they may make rude comments and start fights in the comments section. It is not really that much different from the troll under the bridge in that they try to intimidate others. Lately I have seen comments that just plain don't make sense.

I believe you're right. One of the high scoring users here asked a troll, in the comment section, why they were spamming and making inappropriate remarks. And the response was, "To watch you guys squirm." So obviously there is some sort of pleasure they get out of being the way they are.
Thanks all. I posted a meme recently that read, "Isn't making a smoking section in a restaurant the same as making a peeing section in a swimming pool?" And somebody with the name Meme_osis (or something like that) commented back (using the MOST INTERESTING MAN IN THE WORLD template) with, "No. And you're stupid if you believe that! Is this a troll?
I mean, I generally avoid attacking specific memers, but ninja2016 seems like he owns a keyboard with only 3 keys: ad hominem, "liberalism/liberal", and (insert random praise with the name "Donald Trump" somewhere in the sentence).
