Why "the reckoning" will never come. | Sometimes I think about how fragile conservatives are when it comes to talking about our history. The reactionaries go apoplectic at any notion that America is not the Greatest Country Ever. And without even a hint of irony, in their next breath, many of these same folks revere the treasonous Confederacy, and *still* advocate for the unconstitutional concept of state secession. We should take that as a hint of what is likely to be the future when we look back on this dreadful period. The Trump voters are not going to have a reckoning. There's no "Come to Jesus" moment on the way. "Trumpism" may slip away - but there will be widespread denial. Hagiographic assessments of Trump will be standard. Florida and Texas will probably try to insert some sanctified summary of Trump's legacy into textbooks. The thing most needed to exorcise this demon - a proper reckoning with history - is never going to happen, and it sucks to think about. In 30 years, my Trumper cousins will probably talk about how Biden tried to overturn the 2016 election or some crap.
