If it works, or rather, worked, there would be no reason to seek to preserve it, let alone revive it.
There's not much freedom in being forced to act in a particular hammered out way. Even the slightest deviation from their select norm is demonized.
Conservatives have always favored top heavy control, which is why they have a pronounced tendency to be drawn to autocratic types and oppressive government control micromanaging their lives. The Constitution only serves them as long as it suits their goals, and there's more to it than their revisionist version of the Second Amendment.
