Those checks and balances were erased as far back as Korea when we declared it a police action. We were in a defensive posture all through Vietnam because we were policing, not officially at war. Even in officially declared wars like Afghanistan we play poke the beehive and patty cakes and go on hand out the water bottle missions in an attempt to win hearts and minds rather than shocking them into submission.

I was told when I joined the Army back before PC and transgender troops, that our job was to kill people and break things. You shock enemy troops into a state of submission, they will sign whatever you want them to sign just to make it stop. If a kill ratio is 100,000 enemy to 1 American I consider that 1 American too many.

However many of thiers die before they sign an unconditional surrender is however many needed to die to make that happen.

I was in during the first gulf war but was in a headquarters company. All of our subordinate units were already there and we were set to go but the ground war only lasted 3 days, partly because Bush Sr. abided by the doctrine set forth and stopped after Kuwait had been liberated despite the objections of Schwarkopf who wanted to go all the way to Bagdad.

It pissed me off because I saw it just as Patton after WW2 when he wanted to go all the way to Moscow and should have been allowed to, it could have avoided all those years of cold war and all the nukes that were eventually built.

I served with a gay guy but he didnt make an issue of it and neither did anyone else. He did his job and did it well, no one really cared in my unit.
