The truth like the non-binding promise to buy energy? Or the non-binding promise to invest in the US?

You do realize the Tariffs are leverage and arent intended to be permanently implemented, right?

Nope, they’re too blinded by the fact that it’s Trump implementing them to understand how they work and what they’re being used for.

My understanding of what the tariffs are being used for is to try and bring back jobs and industries back to America as part of "America FIRST".

Basically the idea is that you artificially raise the prices of imported items by taxing them, so it makes domestically produced items relatively cheaper and thus more attractive to American consumers. If there isn't any current domestic production of these items then theoretically American entrepreneurs might want to start businesses and factories producing said items (if they think they can produce and sell them for a price similar to the artificially high priced imported item and make a profit).

What I don't understand is how this would work if the tariff is not permanently implemented. Maybe you or the other person can explain that part..?

This is part of it, but his main overarching goal is to even out the amount of money we have to pay for things from other countries that they do from us. We’re overpaying for things, by a lot, and he’s trying to balance it. Say a big company decides during the tariffs that they should move into the US for production. That’s even better, because it’s cheaper for the company to produce and cheaper for us to buy, especially once the tariffs aren’t needed anymore. So yeah, he hopes that companies move into the US, but that isn’t his main goal.

Eh... I'm no expert but based on what you just said it sounds like you also kind of do not understand tariffs. 🤔 You seem to have it completely backwards.

Other countries are the ones who are "overpaying"....not us. Their country's high tariffs make products made in America artificially more expensive for them to buy in their country.

Meanwhile Chinese products being sold here are dirt cheap. We are underpaying. So the tariffs that trump is trying to do (if he goes through with them) will make US pay more money for their products. Trump's tariffs "even it out" by making us pay more money for their imported products. WE pay for trump's tariffs.

Other countries might make a deal with Trump to lower their tariffs on our products.... but that would probaly just result in cheaper prices for them in their country. It would be good for America in that our businesses selling them the products might be able to sell more of them though.

Prices here would probably only go up. Even if he makes a deal and then lowers his tariffs, the best we could hope for is prices here maybe going to what they were before he did the tariff... maybe.

In any case, companies may or may not come back here but the idea that jobs will be coming back seems like a pipe dream. People here will not work for less $$ than China, Mexico , etc so unless we build factories where the entire thing is automated, it probably ain't happening....And if the entire factory is robots, did any jobs really come back here?

Yes, but you don't understand that if the money stays in the US (aka paying more for goods) that it generates jobs and prevents the federal reserve from printing more money every year thus fighting inflation.

Their whole the consumers will pay for it rhetoric went up in smoke when the inflation numbers went down... lol

Generally speaking, higher prices decreases demand.

If I am a business looking at decreased demand....why would I hire more employees?

To produce the goods you can no longer produce outside the US without paying more.

...Scroll back up to what began this branch of the conversation...

"You do realize the Tariffs are leverage and are not intended to be permanently implemented, right?"

Who is going to invest in building a factory in America based on tariffs that are not permanent? (Let alone a factory with actual human employees)
0 ups, 3w
It depends on the cost and how long they last. If its cheaper to rent a factory in the US for a year and produce goods there and when the tariffs drop, move it all back, that's what they'll do. In the meantime US jobs, money stays in the US.
