How times change. Public schools have gotten so bad that kids in private schools and kids who are homeschooled often outperform kids in public schools. I hope that one suburban community decides to eliminate their public school district if enough parents are either able to homeschool their kids or send them to private schools. Then they can spend their tax dollars on other things, such as expanding library collections, fixing roads, bridges or other infrastructure elements, or sprucing up parks and recreation centers. Or if they don't need to do any ot those things, they can cut tax rates.
