Every time I've gotten a wage increase in the past, my health insurance got more expensive. And I have "good" insurance.

Six months later the employee asked to work less hours so his income wouldn’t disqualify him from govt, welfare.

Or his employer cut back working hours because he couldn’t afford to keep him at the regular hours, resulting in lower income either way.

While I don't disagree, the franchise owner at my job is a snobby Latina woman who is struggling to keep her stores staffed, yet refuses to give any pay raises to incentivize even most experienced employees to stick around. And then she has the nerve to come in and bitch at employees about things like how high her water bííííííííll is.

You have a point but there are always two sides of the story that when you ask her, she will be able to tell you. Government has packed a crap town of regulations and high taxes to small business owners preventing them from getting ahead and be competitive. This is done to protect the big corporations who give founding to government elections to keep them protected from someone opening a business and taking them down.

A family owned small restaurant can have profit margins at less than 50K for the entire year. This is due to the many unnecessary government regulations that make it easy for a national chain to operate but make it extremely difficult for a Small Family Restaurant to survive

This is Dunkin I’m talking about. The franchise owner of the location I work at acts like she’s the hardest-working Latina girlboss this side of the Rio Grande. Yet she always wants to blame employees for her beeeeezneees not doing well. Her business isn’t doing well because almost no one with a decent work ethic wants to stick around by the time they become experienced because the pay isn’t worth it & she shows zero gratitude even to the most dedicated workers.

Did you know that most franchises are single location owner style? Most don't open multiple locations. So that store - is that person's entire life and thr profit margon for the store owner isn't as high as you think.

This franchise has 5 stores. All the neighboring franchises have considerably more locations than that.

This woman and her husband are both attorneys, and she claims to be friends with Steny Hoyer. I highly doubt she is struggling in her personal finances.

If she’s such a hard-working businessLatina with such impressive credentials, then why is she doing such a shitty job at running her stores?

Maybe the reason they have 5 stores is that they run a tight ship. Maybe the reason people don't like to work there is more of a cultural shift to where younger workers are less motivated to work. I'd wager they are probably the run of the mill manager I experienced when I was a kid, but that now a days that kind of manager doesn't jive with the younger workers because their methods involve work.

I used to work at a Godiva chocolate store back before Covid came. That company had high expectations of performance for employees, yet every higher-up I interacted with at that company was nothing but respectful. I know what treating your employees well looks like.

Perhaps some business owners are better than others. I understand that being a Dunkin franchise owner is probably impressive by her home country's standards, but to us gringos it comes off as acting like you're way more important than you actually are.

A fancy chocolatier's work is a heck of a lot different from a fast paced breakfast joint. In one - you aren't pressed for time in your interactions with customers. In the other - you have to be lightning fast to keep up with the demand.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Or rather Donuts & Top Tier priced chocolates. Not a compatible industry. Nice try though.

And be a slave?

I think what they are more saying is let's have a society where money isn't used and people just do what's needed for everyone else to get by. Like a Milk Man, Butcher, Farmer, factory workers and such... Everyone does their jobs & the stuff you need is just available.

That sounds a lot like communism - but the financial aspect is taken out. It's a pipe dream that could never happen because people are fickle creatures who have an inherited desire to have things and for those things to be better than other people's things.

I know, she often refers to the wage system as being a slave to employers.
But the notion of people not working for a wage and just getting what they need describes actual slavery. Slave owners don’t pay their slaves a wage but they provide them with food, housing clothing, healthcare, etc.
