Bible - Any person who believes in Christ is an ambassador/diplomat for Christ on Earth.

The Pope is considered infallible by law only when he speaks ex cathedra. Then and only then is he preserved from the possibility of error on doctrine. At all other times he's simply considered a well-dressed man with a very authoritative title. This is how he CAN be a known Marxist and suspected hater of Christianity and yet still remain Pope. The previous two Popes, however, were the real deal.
