This is in no disrespect for the meme or you.
Most people don't know this but the fact is Cinco de Mayo, until recently, was never really celebrated in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo was a gimmick to sell cars by a Southern California car dealership in the 1960's. It just spread from there.
What happened was a minor battle was fought between Mexico and France on France's second intervention into Mexico in 1862. The battle was not going in Mexico's favor and a Mexican kid, rather than letting their flag get captured by France, grabbed the flag and jumped to his death off of a cliff. It was only somewhat celebrated in the Mexican state of Puebla and no where else until it got so popular in the United States. Basically we exported the celebration to Mexico.
I am only saying this because this is what happens when you marry a woman who a major trivia buff and whose mother is from Mexico. I never knew this before I married her.
