And what did they do with the funding for the program when it existed? Which goes along with my question about today's version of it, what's happening to the funding for the jails, considering all the arrest and release.

The asylums were largely funded by each state. They were closed because the feeling of society back then was that the people housed in the asylums were pretty much incarcerated without ever perpetrating a crime. Of course, those who were in the asylums did go through some due process court proceedings in order to be committed there. But when the asylums were closed, there was no replacement option for those who truly could not function in society without being a threat for violence on innocent people. I'm old enough to remember the asylums. In fact, maybe I am actually the old man in my meme :-)!

Yes I know about that government action too. But I'd still like to know where the funding for the program went. Did it go to more government? Did it go to the politicians special interests? Where did it go? And might that be one of the reason there are so many people on the street? If you get rid of a program that helps those that are unable to properly care for themselves what do you expect them to do? I'm not sure if I'd believe that's you. :)

For most states, there is only a General Fund. Money goes into a General Fund, and gets spent for whatever the legislature dreams up. So, there really is no one answer. Suffice it to say that after the asylums were closed, all kinds of money then needed to be spent on social services for those former mental patients.

In other words, they took the money from a centralized program to spread it around and create social service departments so they have employees to pay resulting in less funding for actual social services. Just a note: Where I live our social services department can't account for 6 million dollars in funding for homeless services.

At least you too can see the money is not going to who it's supposed to help. Then to show you how dysfunctional the system really is, earlier this month the city council threw another 3 million dollars at the homeless problem, to keep people on the streets in my opinion. And again they gave it to the social services department, who still cannot account for the 6 million dollars from the year before.

I do hope the whole country doesn't turn into Los Angeles. But you're very right about the incompetence, corruption, and not wanting to be transparent or accountable for taxpayer's funds. I apologize I spoke on the city's budget this week.
