I know y’all have been ready to move on from Jan. 6 since Jan. 7, but it was a significant event.
It matters that a few thousand Trump supporters broke into the U.S. Capitol. It matters that over a hundred police officers were injured and several died. It matters that the mob chanted “hang Mike Pence,” and would have done it if given the chance. I don’t really like Mike Pence, don’t agree with him on much. He was still our Vice-President and hanging him is treason.
Trump’s suspension from Twitter and FB have everything to do with that event. It’s not persecution. It’s a justifiable punishment for a mob action aimed at the heart of American democracy.
Still, I bet he could find a way back on if he found it within him to accept responsibility and apologize. He doesn’t want to? Fine, but in the meantime, no one can force these companies to platform him, and they’re doing so not only in their own interest but in the public’s interest as well.
Contrast that with the house rules of Trump’s own faltering attempt at an alternative social media platform, designed only with himself in mind. Criticism of Truth Social isn’t allowed on Truth Social? Very petty, very typical, very unsurprising. But it’s his right to make those rules and my right not to participate.
