First off, their prices can't be regulated as oil and gas are open market traded commodities.
But the price consumers pay can and IS reduced by taxpayer funded subsidies. We pay half or even less than other countries generally do. That USA price is for a GALLON, not a liter.

Obviously you have never heard the of the Eisenhower gas price controls. That's what happened in the 1950s when Standard Oil, et al., thought they set the price of gasoline and nobody could stop them.

So Eisenhower got the CEOs of several leading oil companies on a conference call and said, paraphrasing :

Boys.... you have three days to bring down the price of gasoline, or I will nationalize EVERY oil company in America.

Guess what? Within 24 hours the price of gasoline was in free-fall. Within 72 hours it was back to pre-greed levels, which is to say true market pricing.

You are an absolute fool if you think the President cannot control the price of gasoline in America.

I found something about Eisenhower seeking to limit (cheaper) oil imports, but not about price controls. In fact, his moves (unintentionally) ended up sparking the birth of OPEC which the lead to 70s oil crisis.
