The American Civil War was about political power and regional identity. The Northern States really didn't care about slavery. Most Northern States didn't even grant citizenship or voting rights to black folks. Corwin amendment, NY Draft Riot? Why would the Civil War be about race? This meme is based on a false premise. The Civil War was two groups of white people killing each other.

That's actually true. Slavery was one of the reasons, but not the only reason, why the South wanted to leave the United States. So you could say it was two groups of white people killing each other.

There were two main reasons things came to a headin1860. First was the Northern reluctance to allow slavery to expand into the newly acquired Mexican territories. Without expansion, a growing slave population becomes a burden. Second was the development of a militant abolitionist movement. Nat Turner terrified Southerners and John Brown was their worst nightmare in the flesh.

I am not denying what you said or even your meme. I up voted your meme. I am just saying there were other issues. And for the majority of Southerners slavery was not one of them because they didn't own slaves. Only 7% of the population owned slaves.

If I didn't own slaves I wouldn't be marching off into battle, risking my life, leaving my crops unattended, just so some rich farmer could keep his slaves.

Oh, I'm not arguing. History is complicated.

I do apologize if I sounded argumentative. I was not. I agree with you.

In reality it was about states rights. If the north had bought and freed every slave, the entire war could have been prevented, but they wanted to free them all at once and completely destroy the southern economy.

While that is true, the north would have never bought the slaves. Many northern states passed laws preventing blacks from relocating to their state. The north was just as racist as the south. They (and only some of them) didn't believe in slavery. However, the purpose for the north getting involved in the war was not at all about slavery. By and large no one really cared. The north wanted to keep the union together because the south was where most of the food was produced.

That said the Republican party was actually formed as an anti-slavery party. So those people were opposed to slavery and Lincoln was their first presidential candidate.

Even so the emancipation proclamation did not free all slaves. It freed the slaves in areas of the south that fought the north. A few areas helped the north and they got to keep their slaves until the 13th and 14th amendment. In other words Lincoln was punishing those who fought against the north and rewarding those who helped him.

So then once the 13th amendment was passed during the civil war, outlawing slavery, one group who had slaves dropped all its non slave issues and surrendered.

Slavery was not one of the reasons. "State rights" to the issue of slavery was. That's a massive difference.

You are correct. Lincoln pretty much decimated the 10th amendment by taking away states rights. He way overstepped the limitations the Constitution placed on him and congress.

The federal government could not free slaves because the issue of slavery was a state issue.

Slavery had to end but in doing so, not only were more Americans killed in the Civil War than any other war but the rights of states and individuals were greatly diminished. And it was this action opened the door for the Marxists to gain a foothold and drag us down even further.

This looks like the beginning of a new meme

But the civil war WASN'T about race! It was about state rights vs federal control. It was also about the economy. The north invaded the south to reclaim the rich cash crop plantation economy because north was manufacturing industry based.

I like the intention of making a meme about Whoopi's recent insensitive remarks and the hypocrisy of the left not "cancelling" her, like they have with so many "conservatives", also expressing their opinions, but the Civil War is a bad example, because it was inherently not about race at all. It was a war basically over federal rights vs. states' rights. The Confederate states attempted to leave the union, which they are allowed to do under the Constitution, but the federal government did not want that to happen. The North did not care about black slaves and didn't give black slaves any rights. President Lincoln also said many times that his intention is not to free slaves, but to maintain the Union.

well, to be fair, she should be cancelled just like all the other TV personalities that have been cancelled for saying far, far less offensive comments.

a fun history fact: Lincoln actually offered command of the Union army first to Robert E. Lee, but he turned it down since he felt more allegiance to Virginia, his home state, which had seceded.

By union you must be referring to leaving the Northern states which insisted they owned the south and refused to allow them to leave the north behind.

"Union" was what Lincoln used to refer to the united states at the time. So when Lincoln said he wanted to maintain the Union, he was referring to the integrity of all the states at the time. The U.S. wasn't referred to "the United States" until after the Civil War, which also wasn't called the "Civil War" until after WW1. From the northern side, the war was called the "War of the Rebellion" and from the southern side, it was called "War of Northern Aggression".

NOT even close! The north invaded the south in order to reclaim the cash crops. North was manufacturing industrial based. They would've starved through the winter.
0 ups, 2y
actually, the Midwest would have fed them, control of the cotton was what the north had to have that's why they passed export tariffs on it to prevent it from being sent to the English mills and to limit demand.
