There have been numerous lawsuits filed by atheists with the sole purpose of stripping away anything religious (or rather, Christian) from prayer in school to Nativity scenes in public owned areas to displays of the Ten Commandments in courts and gov't buildings to "In God We Trust" on our money.
Atheists tend to be rather touchy about religion, instead of simply walking away and ignoring that which they claim they are simply walking away from and ignoring.
Ever hear of an Amish complaining about Diwali or Zoroastrians complaining about statues of Mary on people's front lawns?
There's one across the street from me at a house where a family originally from Thailand lives. Despite being Buddhist, they left the statue there since buying the house in the 1990s out of respect, the father told me once. (There was a big noisy Hindu pre-wedding celebration across the street and people were coming out wondering what it was. I didn't want to gawk so I was farther away near his house and started talking to him. We both thought the Indian festivity was beautiful).
A couple of blocks away another such family that has a small fish pond with a Buddha bust overlooking in front has a decorated Christmas tree visible through the front window every year. Mind you, Buddhist is officially an atheistic philosophy, albeit one that seems rather religious in practice. But they don't have a problem with religion.
Sure, there's the zealotry that comes with conversion, so Atheists might be thus prone to making a big fuss, but that's something the religious do. No one stomps around making a ruckus for years after they found out Santa isn't real.
All too often Atheists seem to be missing their own point. They don't want to believe? Fine, then perhaps they should stop making God out to be such a big thing.
