What I and the OP are referring to is the "gain of function" research. In case you haven't been keeping up on current events, that's where a fairly innocuous disease gets engineered to be more contagious and/or cause more damage in those that it infects. This research was done at the Wuhan lab with funds provided by the U.S. Government approved by Fauci during the Obama administration.

Ah! That actually explains a lot.
COVID 19, while more deadly than the common flu, was/is not deadlier enough to warrant the over reaction to the outbreak. But the overreaction makes sense if those "in the know" are freaking out wondering what the hell they accidentally unleashed.

Three possible reasons that he need to cover it up:
1) Funding of Gain-of-Function research was illegal.
2) Funded Gain-of-Function research in Wuhan went wrong.
3) All of the above.
