What political bent is there other than the truth (that the quote was used to inflame hatred for the monarchy)?

I may have been slightly incorrect about who uttered it, but that's a product of not having read any substantive material on the French Revolution for a while.

Something to the effect of the quote might have been disseminated at the time of the revolution by “French Republic” advocates.

But “Republican-revolutionary opponents” is a quite inaccurate term.

Erm...no it's not. Republicans (those in favor of replacing the monarchy with a republic, via revolution) stoked hatred for the quote and ensured it was enshrined in history.
