Yes, defacing the statue was horrid and wrong. It was like the people who defaced Grant's grave; they clearly know nothing of history.

That said, George Floyd WAS murdered and we have no reason NOT to put up a statue for him. The intent of the statue clearly is not to idolize or prop up drug culture in any way. It's there so we can remember a man who was killed in cold blood by someone who was sworn to uphold the law.

Unless Cannon was targeted specifically for not being black (I don't know details of the incident) then I don't think it's fair to call it 'black violence'. Violence, sad as it is, is just violence.

Floyd's case was exceptional because an officer of the law in an inner city, an individual who operates in an exceptionally troubled area and is held to the highest standards as a result, failed to meet those standards in an impressively disturbing fashion.

Frankly, considering what scum Floyd was, Chauvin should get a medal. Five kids by who knows how many women, none of whom did he actually support. Committed armed home invasion. For that alone, a sane society would have executed him.

If we executed for common law felonies, all of us (except the felons, of course) would be a great deal safer. He broke into a woman’s home and held her at gunpoint. That is not minor misbehavior. That is a violation of every possible standard of decency.

Well I sourced my views on it from my former criminal justice teacher and current friend. He's an officer here in Montana and if he says it was on the level I'm inclined to agree. Take that as you will, I suppose.

It's not avoidance. We can't go whining about the left's incredibly asinine focus on race as a defining characteristic of society and its role in events in this country but also go driving such wedges ourselves. Choose one or the other. I personally refuse to bring race into my judgement of an issue unless it's actually a driving cause of that issue.

The narrative I hear in general is that the left brings race into the equation when it doesn't belong in that discussion. If you hold a different view then that's fine and I apologize for assuming differently. However, my point stands; either we prove ourselves no better than them by doing the same, or we lead by example and keep race out of the discussion unless it genuinely belongs.
