So the man who conducted the longest spoken filibuster in history against the civil rights act left to become a republican.

What you described is the switch - the Democratic party embraced progressive agendas. They gained black voters in the north and west. Dixiecrats didn't like it, and republicans courted those voters by adopting the southern strategy. That's it. That's the switch.

The founding of Israel and displacement of people who lived there was a bad decision. It was brought on by guilt over what had happened to Jews in Europe and the long history of Anti-Semitism that had led up to it. I'm not saying the founding of Israel itself was a bad idea, but the way the displacement occurred was bound to make enemies and was short sighted. Also, one could argue the allies gave the Jews land that wasn't theirs to give.

Regardless of that, we now have a group driven from their homelands and a group defending their new home. Both deserve sympathy, and neither are above reproach. We are involved whether we like it or not based on the amount of money we give to Israel each year.

There have been 3 iterations of the KKK. The first was what you refer to. I don’t know if I’d call them paramilitary they were more like terrorists or anti government militias. Federal forces went after and managed to suppress them 1871. They were democrats and were against federal efforts/republican initiatives.

Second klan was pro prohibition, anti-Jew, and anti catholic. I don’t think they were actually focused on black/white. It only lasted about 5 years and was apparently popular with both republicans and democrats.

The third and current klan is actually a lot of different local groups running under the name. part of why it hasn’t been stomped out is the lack of centralized leadership and central organization. They are pretty much just local clubs. They are generally republican, though I don’t think they have anything like enough numbers to be taken seriously and I’m sure misses republicans don’t appreciate the association. In Dayton Ohio a couple of years ago they planned a rally and only 9 members showed up. Over 500 counter protesters came.
