I know the folk wisdom says that small government is better, but the fact is most of our growth and move to federal was necessary. I'm sure it could have worked the other way, but I doubt we would be the super power we are. Many of the early regulations were pushed for by industry and the people. "As a result, a group of independent regulatory commissions emerged as the 20th century dawned. The first of these agencies was the Interstate Commerce Commission, set up in 1887 to monitor abuses in the railroad industry. Reform movements of the early 20th century demanded that government regulate child labor, food processing and packaging, and working and living conditions for the laboring classes." The new deal and WWII are really what grew the government. But think about the sacrifices made across the board. There was a lot done to win WWII like food coupons (rationing), scrap drives, etc.
the local politician thing - 100%. Some people only pay attention to who runs for President...but where does the candidate usually come from?
I also know that one of Trumps things was "eliminate 2 regs for every 1 new." I laughed at that one. Like politics aside it was arbitrary. I'm sure there are regulation heavy areas...but there are also probably areas that keep things slim. Wouldn't it suck to be a group that had worked hard to keep things to a bear minimum...and now you are being punished where those with a lot of fat are in essence being rewarded. I know what was intended with it but I don't think it was a good way of doing it.
I like things like building inspectors, safety codes, etc. I know some people who are against all regulation and i don't get it. I like knowing restaurants are supposed to wash dishes at a certain temperature; that they are inspected.
Taken as a whole, they seem like a lot but its like looking at how much you spent on groceries throughout the year all at once. The move to federal over local to is sometimes just a matter of it not making sense to reinvent the wheel. I work in a regulation heavy industry and higher level federal regulations are generally better written than the local ones, better and more often updated, etc.
As far as newspapers and the media...yeah probably, but most people read their local papers.
