Posted on December 4, 2012 by Stranger
I suspect there was only one searcher, but someone or ones came by looking for “canada has lower crime rates than us.”
In general, no. Using numbers from StatCanada and the spreadsheet version of the FBI Uniform Crime crime report, we obtain these crime numbers and rates for comparison:
The United States population for 2011 was estimated at 311,591,917, while Canada’s population was estimated at 34,800,000 for 2011. The FBI includes all crimes reported by the police, while Canada lists adult and youth crimes separately. If you wish to verify these numbers, please get out your calculator.
The United States had 10,266,737 police reported crimes for 2011, for a crime rate of 3,295.0 crimes per 100,000 people.
Canada had 1,984,916 police reported crimes for 2011, for a crime rate of 5703.7 crimes per 100,000 people.
