It sounds like you don't get it , Hew. If you were a family member of a minority group graduate and very uncomfortable about attending a huge Ivy League graduation with all those 'upper crust' families, you might feel differently.

If my kid was attending a huge Ivy League school and was graduating, mind you I'm not "upper crust", I'd be proud to go and throw it in their silver spoon faces. Then again, I don't care what other people think about me or my family.

not the 'throw it in their faces' part, just the 'I don't care what other people think' part

This is just me, but if I was someone who wasn't considered elite and managed to thrive and graduate in one of those schools you can bet I'd be up there sticking it in their snobby faces that I'm just as good as them.

you are just as good as them but most families with Ivy League grads are not snobby, theyre just like yours and mine. don't believe what you see in the movies

I'm aware of that...but it is a stereotype, which is something one must consider.

Though, I don't see why segregation would be necessary if most ivy league grads are the same no matter the background. :/

i think they're trying to accommodate the families of the grads, people who might feel uncomfortable with a crowd of people who are so 'smart', or wealthy, or who know what fears they might have

I guess...it just smacks of pre-60's segregation to me.

it's purely voluntary and non-exclusive. they want to accommodate sub-cultures so more people can enjoy the experience of graduation. it seems fine to me.

A fair take.

Wow! Segregation justified from a lib.

So someone not 'comfortable' with those from a lower crust can boycott them. Got it!

you'll never change Syd. this move by Columbia is not about boycotting. it's about letting people choose the context of their ceremony. none of it is mandatory.

hard to believe that Don Rickles passed away almost four years ago. anyway the position of 'Mr. Warmth' is open if you're interested.

As is the position of overly sensitive work joke for you.

Wow, that has got to be one of the most ignorant takes on race, as an issue, that I've ever seen.

wow that has to be one of the most careless reads of a comment that i've ever seen. i said minority group, not race, buddy. after all this time, you still haven't made any progress?

Tomato / tamale. The essence of my point remains. Your reply is as ignorant as your original comment.

I'm certainly not going to claim "progress", by your standard or any other. All I know is that the immediate members of my family, who are a reasonable mixture of non-white races (or as you might refer to them, minority groups) would never feel uncomfortable as you describe some members of "minority groups" feeling. So maybe for me the issue is that I'm not exposed to the type of weak minded person (yes, just my $0.02 worth) who would feel the way you describe.

So, educate me Please explain to me why being in a "minority group" would make its group members feel uncomfortable at the type of event you described?

well, son, two of the groups that Columbia is offering a private ceremony to are first-generation college and low-income families. my family was in both of those categories but they dressed their best and came to my graduation at a similar school. there was nothing for them to be ashamed of but i saw how uncomfortable they were for the whole day. before you conclude ignorance on the part of others, you might want to think outside of your awesome personal box. try to imagine how other people can be different or how else things might be different for them. people who are different from you aren't all weak-minded. quite the contrary in this case, but they might not have had the same advantages or environment you did.

Oh, just to mention the obvious, since you have no ability to grasp the obvious, thanks for NOT answering my question:

"Please explain to me why being in a "minority group" would make its group members feel uncomfortable at the type of event you described?"

Elvis, I think this will be our last conversation since you've always been rude to me (but I'm not insulted), and your reading comprehension is the pits. I did answer your question plainly.

Muh anecdotal evidence means segregation GOOD.

My awesome personal box was as poor and first generation as you claim yours is. I stand by what I said.
