That's technically not true. You can vote for anyone you want. You can write in Abraham Lincoln if you want to. I'd be willing to bet Charles Manson and BTK got written in on someone's ballot. It's messed up but it happens and those votes count. If everyone voted for Abraham Lincoln they'd have to disqualify him and elect the runner-up. That'd be messed up too but it's a fun conversation.

No, those votes get counted as "other" or something like that. They're basically counted as spoiled ballots. And you always have a right to spoil your ballot, same as you have a right to not vote at all, but they don't count towards the result - they're counted for reference only.

If Charles Manson gets more votes than Joe Biden, Joe Biden wins. To take a more gray area example, if more people write in Bernie Sanders than vote for Joe Biden, different states have different rules on this and generally speaking, Bernie Sanders would have to file ahead of time an official declaration that he is in fact running as a write-in alternative and if he doesn't, then Joe Biden wins.
