It is consistent at least with their relatively new tone of refusal to set precedents.
I think it's an attempt to politically sidestep their responsibilities to investigate and determine what actions need be taken against the former President. And given their recent consistency and the pulse of the Supreme Court, it is likely this will succeed.
However, it is merely a delay tactic. I think their best opportunity is to proceed with the proceedings, find Trump not guilty and move on. I find it curious that they're not proceeding with that avenue and see it as a signal that Trump has lost influence with enough Senate Republicans who are in favor of voting to convict Trump but whose seats might be up for reelection very soon.
I don't think anything will come of it. I don't think Trump will even get a slap on the wrist. If there is any real solution to keep Trump from running again, it will have to come directly from the RNC. Like it should've done the first time around.
