I watched Biden several times say he was going to ban fracking and not once did he ever say he was going to limit fracking to just federal land. Regardless it is an empty claim because most fracking is done on private land.

"... a sane and trustworthy Republican like Romney"

Good one KF!!!

Speaking of covid, did you notice in the last debate, the items that Sundowner Joe rattled off as part of his plan to battle the covid, were all things that Trump has already done?

Biden of 12 years ago? Sure, I would be okay with him as president. I'd disagree with him on many issues, but he had his natural mind.

Biden of today? Please go home to your basement or better, your porch, Joe. Enjoy your golden years. You've "earned" it.

Kamikaze, I live in Utah. Romney is my senator. We hear more about what he is doing than the rest of the country and I really don't know what going through his mind.

Romney is certainly destroying any chances he ever had of winning re-election in his next election. The one thing that Romney did that was really good is that he voted to confirm Amy Coney Barrett.

You're probably livid about Amy Coney Barrett because you were told by the media. She is a strict Constitutionalist. Which means that she should make exactly the right type of Supreme Court justice that we need. The left only wants Supreme Court justices that will act based on politics. The Supreme Court is NOT suppose to be a political branch of the government. It is also NOT suppose to make law. Only Congress can make law. The Courts are grossly overstepping their authority when they create law. Creating law is what make the left love Darth Vader Ginsberg so much. When the left could not get their way in Congress they turned to the courts. That is how Roe v Wade became law. Leaving the abortion debate alone, the idea that something become the law of the land coming from the Supreme Court is evil. We are a representative Republic. Our law makers are suppose to represent us. The Supreme Court is not elected by the people and therefore if any law comes from them it is in direct violation of the Constitution both in the spirit and letter of the Constitution.

Yet stupid leftists have been getting away with violating the Constitution for decades and it needs to stop. But it won't Obama started writing law through executive orders and executive statements. Another violation of the Constitution because the president does not make law. ONLY CONGRESS (OUR ALLEGED REPRESENTATIVES) MAKE LAW. The Constitution gives them that authority specifically because they are beholden to the people, you and I.

Now that Obama opened that door Trump has done the same thing. That door will never be closed and the office of the president has essentially became a dictatorship. Thanks Obama!!

Romney’s vote to confirm Barrett made no logical sense. His impeachment vote showed that he believes Trump to be constitutionally unfit for the office of President, so why the heck should he confirm any of Trump’s nominees? Also: Romney announced that he didn’t vote for Trump in the election as a citizen.

But at the end of the day, GOP Senators gonna be GOP Senators I guess.

Only Susan Collins didn’t vote to confirm ACB and that is merely because she is in the political fight of her life in Maine.

Anywho, water under the bridge at this point.

If the GOP wants to rebuild itself in a saner direction after the electoral blowout it is likely to suffer next week, then they should listen to and promote rare figures like Sen. Romney that maintained some degree of political independence from Trump.

Trump has so thoroughly taken over the GOP with his unique brand of nativist nonsense that that is going to be a tremendously difficult task. And a one-term defeated President is tantalizingly constitutionally eligible to run again, though Trump himself probably doesn’t have many years left in him.

However, Trump cultists say they want Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and heck even Barron Trump to all sit in that big chair, and they’re certainly not kicking the bucket any time soon.

So, I will grab my popcorn and watch.

Kamakaze. I'm not a Trump cultist. I didn't vote for him in 2016. I didn't vote the walking nightmare that is Hillary Clinton either.

I voted for Trump this year because none of the 3rd party candidates impress me enough and because elections have become less about the person running for president and more about competing ideologies. This isn't a race between Trump and Biden. This is a race between freedom and Socialism. Biden may not be a Socialist but Harris is and we all know that Biden will be declared incompetent under the 25th amendment as soon as Harris can make it all happen.

This is also a vote between keeping my job and a crashed economy where no one has a job. Democrats haven't the slightest clue how the economy works. If they did they would remove their lips from Karl Marx's behind and run the other direction.

Trump's impeachment was based on a total and complete fabrication by the Democrat party. The documents have been declassified and shows that the entire Trump/Russia collusion myth was a total fabrication by Obama, Biden and Hillary to keep Trump out of the White House. Once he get elected the Dems, from day one, began working on impeaching Trump. Every bit of evidence used to impeach Trump was fabricated by the Democrats.

The grounds that Pelosi got impeached by the House on were baseless. They weren't even crimes.

The whole thing was a farce. The fact that Romney voted to remove Trump from office makes me question his sanity. Like I said, I do not know what is going through Romney's mind but I do think that he would be much happier if he became a Democrat so that people would know where he really stands.

Well, I didn’t vote for Hillary in ‘16 (or Obama in ‘12 or ‘08), so that makes two of us.

However, the nightmare of Trump’s presidency has put me in the Democratic column for probably awhile until the GOP works through some of its issues.

Seating a 3rd SCOTUS justice days before an election that by all accounts looks set to be a landslide against the GOP isn’t a sign of strength, it’s the sad and desperate act of a Party that’s on the backfoot and knows it.

The judiciary is McConnell’s Rosebud, but Schumer has made it known that he gives zero f’s at this point.

Particularly if the blue landslide next week is large enough, “packing the court” becomes not only possible but imperative in a democratic sense

It all hinges on control of the Senate

The GOP Senate made the rules at the impeachment trial. They could have called Joe Biden and Hunter Biden as witnesses in order to substantiate Trump’s meddling in Ukraine and prove up their “no u” theory against Democrats.

Or, AG Barr could have gone after them at any point over the last few years.

Why didn’t they?

The adults in the room know there’s no there there, and that the vague and convoluted allegations of corruption against the Bidens are more useful circulating in the right-wing fever swamps along with the Killary crap.

I look forward to pointing this out many times over the next 20+ years, because that is literally how long the Killary crap has lasted.

Kamikazi. As far as ramrodding those amendments through. The newly formed states of Oregon and Washington, their senators weren't really given a choice about their votes for those amendments. Plus the 14th amendment itself fired all of the Senators and Representatives from the southern states who were for the Confederacy. "Carpet baggers" and "scalawags" from the north ran down to the southern states and ran for those offices. They were only interested in political power and not representing anyone in the southern states.
1 up, 3y
Yeah, but you kind of have to get the traitors out of government in order to re-constitute the Republic.

They were not heavily persecuted though, to my knowledge: only fired. Lincoln was pretty lenient considering the immense carnage the southern rebellion inflicted.

Don’t worry though, racism came back with a vengeance under Jim Crow after the end of Reconstruction.

While you’re whining about “carpetbaggers,” can you spare any outrage for the 100 years of segregation?

About the Kamala Harris birther theory, trump said, "I just heard it today that she doesn't meet the requirements and by the way the lawyer that wrote that piece is a very highly qualified, very talented lawyer. I have no idea if that's right. I would have assumed the Democrats would have checked that out before she gets chosen to run for vice-president." He did not say over what grounds she would be disqualified, nor did he say he believed it. Then, about the go back where you came from quote, he said it more as, "before you do that in our country, try it in those." Not, "You don't belong in America." reading what he actually said vs. what the Huffington Post says makes a world of difference. I do acknowledge that Abraham Lincoln and Lyndon B. Johnson May have made those remarks to get voters. However, we don't know for sure. Lincoln may have wanted it to end at anti-slavery laws, but we don't know. However, we can't just assume that a racist politician is really just pretending to be racist to get voters.

Kamikaze. Leaving the slavery issue alone do you understand the fundamental change the 13th and 14th amendments made to our government? The reason why states rights was so important is because at the time of the founding each state considered itself more like its own nation rather than a state. Under the Articles of Confederation (which preceded the Constitution) they were their own nations. The states did not want to give the federal government power over the states. When the Constitution was written it was written in a way that preserved state sovereignty. And to make sure of that the 9th and 10 amendments were added.

Lincoln took that power away from the states when he freed the slaves. Now the federal government had more power than the states.

Slavery had to be abolish and I believe that left alone it would have become obsolete in another 50 years or so because of new technologies. Slavery should have never been a part of our nation. It wouldn't have been if it wasn't for 2 of the 13 colonies that would not compromise on that issue. Everyone else was on board with ending slavery.

There are provisions in the Constitution to end slavery. Your a Democrat so I understand that the Constitution is something you have been taught to despise but there are clauses in the Constitution that were added with the idea of ending slavery. One was that the importation of slaves was to end 20 years after the Constitution was ratified. The other was the infamous 3/5th clause that liberals just do not understand at all. It never declared a slave 3/5ths of a person. It declared them 3/5ths of a vote. You see only the male landowner could vote back then. His voted was counted for himself and everyone who lived on his land. So if he was married and had 3 kids then his vote counted for 5 people. Considering a slave owner would be more inclined to vote to keep slavery the founding fathers said fine but your slaves are not going to count as 1 vote per slave. They are only going to count as 3/5ths of a vote. This weakened the slave owner's voting power. It gave abolitionists more voting power than slave owners. Eventually slave owners who wanted a voice in government would have to cut back on the number of slaves or end the practice altogether.

So what I lament is not the abolition of slavery, I lament the power the federal government got in that exchange. It diminishes our freedom and now idiot Socialists have a foothold to further destroy or freedom.
1 up, 3y
Lol I don’t “hate” the Constitution as a Democrat or as anything else. Quite the opposite. It’s a relatively brief yet powerful document that struck the first blow in favor of freedom and democracy in the modern world, and countless other countries have looked to it for inspiration.

However, I disagree that the 13th and 14th Amendments “fundamentally” transformed the relationship between the federal government and states. The Bill of Rights contains many clauses that encode individual rights into the fabric of our nation.

Rights that supersede every kind of legislation and can’t be taken away, either by states or by the federal government, frankly. Unless we were to literally repeal the Constitution itself, which under the Constitution, can’t be done.

So, the 13th and 14th Amendments were just a continuation of and development upon the logic already embedded in the first 10 Amendments.

And while we’re talking about unconstitutional things: Secession is not permitted anywhere in the Constitution. So the Confederacy was an unconstitutional treasonous movement from the get-go that nobody who claims to support the Constitution should have any sympathy for.

Kamikaze. I'll do you one better. The emancipation proclamation does not free all of the slaves. It is a punishment to the Southern slave owners. The counties (and parishes in Louisiana) in the Southern states that sided with the Union were allowed to keep their slaves. It wasn't until the 13th and 14th amendments were passed that slavery was abolished. However, in doing so Lincoln had to nearly destroy the 10th amendment by usurping power only given to the states. Slavery was a states rights issue and not a federal issue. In other words Lincoln nor anyone else had the authority to free the slaves.

Despite all of that Lincoln did ramrod the 13th and 14th amendments through congress.

Because you are a leftist I need to explain something else to you. Nothing in what I said should be taken that I want to bring slavery back. Slavery is and was a disgusting and deplorable practice. I deplore any person or government thinking they have the right to own another person. This is also why I deplore Socialism and it's variations, Communism, Fascism and Nazism. You probably think Fascism and Nazism are right wing ideologies. Yeah, I was taught that lie in school also. They are both based on Socialism and therefore are exclusively left wing ideologies.

So about the time the left mostly gave up on the idea of slavery they jumped on the Socialist bandwagon and are now promoting a new kind of slavery.
1 up, 3y
Woooooow

It appears you have a distaste for slavery (great — so do I!) yet are still

STILL

Wringing your hands over how exactly America put it to an end

Amending the Constituion is 1000% legal under the Constitution itself, and doing so requires huge political majorities. There was no “ramrodding” about it. Lol.

If you want to blame anyone, then blame the Founders for establishing a supposedly free and egalitarian country that nonetheless permitted slavery, and then blame the states (southern and otherwise) that tolerated slavery for decades and indeed ultimately shed blood for it rather than simply putting it to an end under their own state laws, ultimately necessitating federal intervention.

If the Founders really wanted to preserve states’ rights to the degree you suggest, and I‘m not sure they did, then they shouldn’t have left the ticking time-bomb of slavery unaddressed in a founding document that was supposedly about protecting everyone’s rights.

E V E R Y O N E ‘ S

Kamikaze. I apologize. I didn't watch the debates. I saw what Biden said prior to the debates. But between the time I made my last comment and now I saw a clip of the debates where Biden clearly said "federal lands".

I got my ballot in the mail and voted already. This is an election between about 6 people including Kanye West. Clearly everyone is stuck in the two mode because if they don't vote for X then they will be stuck with Y. But I just wanted to point out that your statement wasn't completely factual.

This virus is actually SARS 2. SARS 1 was more deadly than SARS is proving to be. What did Barack Obama and Joe Biden do when the SARS 1 pandemic hit? Obama was president then.

Trump acted in accord with the information that he had at the time. The problem is not Trump but Fauci. One day he says don't wear a mask, the next day he says wear a mask. One day he said this virus could kill 2 million people in the US and hospitals would be overrun, then he backtracked from that number and we're not even close. And the hospitals are emptier now than they were because no one wants to get COVID at the hospital.

The only problem with Hydroxychloroquine is Trump mentioned it by name. Had Trump never mentioned that drug then the left would not lampoon it. It is NOT a cure but it is pretty close to a cure. It has been shown repeatedly in hospitals and doctors offices to show prevention and a reduction in the severity of COVID-19. The only thing "unscientific" is the left's nonsensical knee-jerk reaction to it.

The problem is that if Trump ever mentions any type of drug that he gets reports on as showing any signs of helping the left goes berserk and calls it "unscientific". Kamala Harris, stupidly said that if a vaccine is found and it comes from Trump she isn't taking it. Who would take ever dare to take a vaccine if Trump personally created it but that is not the point. Trump is not a medical scientist but he has commissioned medical scientists to work on the vaccine. Kamala is just another close-minded Democrat idiot.

Far too many in the Democrat party would be just as stupid. So if a vaccine is actually found and Trump finds out about it and announces it then many Democrats will refuse it. If it is found and Trump doesn't mention it then the left is going to point fingers at Trump and say that he is holding back vital information. Trump just can never catch a break from you haters.

Yes, I still gotta problem. (and no, I haven't read through this full thread, so I'm sure someone else will have pointed out what I'm about to...)

In the last debate and in full cleanup mode since, he and his campaign have tried to say that he only said he would not allow new fracking on federal lands, but that's not what he said.

How do I know this? I watched/heard him say it myself. You did watch the democrat debates... right? When he woke up long enough to stumble through an answer, he absolutely said no new fracking, period. He didn't qualify it by saying 'on federal lands only' or any such nonsense.

Look KF, it's fine for Sundowner Joe to change his position, for whatever reason, even if it's naked political ambition. It's lying and saying he never said it, in conjunction with the same media that's censoring news about his possible involvement with China and Ukraine that I find utterly repulsive and anti-American. Yes, I gotta problem with censorship.

And fwiw, in the last debate he also said we'd get to carbon neutrality by 2025. That's got to seem a bit aggressive, even by your unrealistically idealistic liberal ideals.

He also seems to think he's running against someone named George. Maybe he meant Washington, since he probably ran against the father of our country in his first political race.
