Interesting. I am a Christian (and a very flawed one, at that), but I would like to say something that may or may not be misapplied: Christians not only SHOULD be, but MUST be held to a higher standard in the way that we engage others. This is a big part of why I try to be kind even when I feel like others aren’t. The bumper sticker that says “Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiving” to often becomes a mantra in an attempt to excuse bad behavior rather than express gratitude for God’s mercy and grace. Jesus was very clear when he said “blessed are you when people mistreat you and falsely say all kinds of evil about you because of me”, Not “blessed are you when you jump into political discussions and act like others are pieces of trash”. We are blessed when people FALSELY speak evil of us, on account of Christ, not when we act like jack wagons as a result of a disagreement. That is not a slam to anybody on this thread, simply some thing that I have seen very much lately from both the conservative and liberal sides.
On that note, I’ve heard many conservatives who believe that it doesn’t make sense to be a liberal and a Christian, but I’m sure there are plenty on the other side to say the same thing. People ask “how can you support trump?“ And my response is typically that I will support a person who comes across as a jerk but is pro life over someone who comes across with more decency but supports mass infanticide. I guess that’s neither here nor there, though.
It’s definitely not just about somebody dying on the cross. If that person had not been the son of God Himself ( and “One with God“, the word become flesh, etc.), then his sacrifice would not have been enough to assuage God’s righteous anger against the sins of a rebellious race of people that he created...i.e., you and me. The fact that He rose from the dead shows that He overcame sin and death once and for all, and has destroyed its hold over anyone who turns to Him in repentant faith. The life, death, burial, resurrection, and personhood of Jesus Christ Are historical and affect every human being whoever lives, whether they know it or not. And the simple fact is… A person could be pro life, Republican, conservative, and the nicest human being in the world, but without Christ they will not get into heaven, because Jesus Himself said “I am the way, the truth, and the life no one comes to the Father except through me.” Politics don’t get anyone into heaven. Only Jesus does.
