No. Great Britain has a representative democracy, but they're not a republic - they have a queen.

A representative democracy is just called a representative democracy. It could be a republic. It could also be not a republic.

Republic is a what, and democracy is a how. All of this nonsense comes from people trying to get these words to describe things they're not meant to describe.

Republic = there's no king.

Doesn't say anything about not being a democracy.

It's not a Democratic form of government, it's a Republican form of government. Learn the difference! The two are NOT the same!

Don't pay any attention to AuntieHysterics.
Much like Joe Biden, the brain damage isn't immediately apparent.
Takes about 5 minutes until you can tell how bad it really is, and getting worse.

I'm TELLING you the difference.

Republic = there's no king
Democracy = people can vote without necessarily being nobility

There are democracies that aren't even republics. There are republics that aren't democracies.

But we're both. I can vote for the President, but he's a president and not a king. We're a democracy. We're a republic. We're both. There is no contradiction. You are wrong. You have been lied to.

No a republic has laws that can't be voted out where 51% of the population votes to kill the other 49%. That's the difference.

You're talking about a referendum.

A republic just means there's no king. That's all. That's it. You can run a republic by referendum if you want to. You can run a republic not by referendum if you want to. Either way, as long as there's no king, you're still a republic.

I like the 2b1 definition: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/republic
Definition of republic
1a(1): a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president
(2): a political unit (such as a nation) having such a form of government
b(1): a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law
(2): a political unit (such as a nation) having such a form of government
c: a usually specified republican government of a political unit
the French Fourth Republic
2: a body of persons freely engaged in a specified activity
the republic of letters
3: a constituent political and territorial unit of the former nations of Czechoslovakia, the U.S.S.R., or Yugoslavia

Oh, you liked the definition you picked and chose from a list, did you?

Republic means there's no king. It's at the top of the list you yourself gave.

No its at the top of the list in that particular dictionary website.

Because that's the basic definition. That's what it has always meant and still means. The Republic of Venice didn't meet the definition of 2b1 and yet - look, right in the name, they somehow qualified as a Republic. Gee wizz.

Okay, so let’s say I am the dictator of a country. Since that country has a dictator and not a king, does that mean the country us actually a republic?
[deleted]

Yes, and you see that in the country's name very often. VERY often.

So?
0 ups, 4y
That’s not just what it means. No king, you have been lied to. A republic is ruled by laws and in a democratic republic those laws prevent the tyranny of the majority. It means the majority can’t vote to make laws against the minority that are guaranteed in the guiding set of laws. For us that is the constitution. Saying Republic only means no king is wildly simplistic and ignorant.
0 ups, 4y
That s the point these “republic only means no king” people can’t ducking get. It means more than that and is exactly what you said a democracy with a system of laws to keep the tyranny of the majority in check.

Protect them against domestic violence? Well since Democrats won’t do it time for a little sedition act and scoop them up and put them in jail for sedition.
1 up, 4y
Well since most of the rioters are from out of state they could send in the FBI en masse and just arrest all of them. If they are from in state get them on conspiracy to commit and if they are outside get them on the crime.
