Yeah, that's old news.

11/05/14

"A Sun newspaper competition offering the winner a date with a Page 3 girl has been banned for being "sexist and demeaning".

The paper's Dream Team fantasy football raffle was reported 1,036 times to an advertising regulator after "the light-hearted marketing exercise" was sent out to its subscribers by email.

The promotion offered readers who recruited 10 or more players a chance to win a date with a topless model and it also stated that they would "let you pick which one"."

Hah! You not being funny does not equate to other people lacking a sense of humor.

Thankfully, you are unintentionally funny so it hasn't been entirely dull. :)

So Europeans (Spanish actually) called Inuits Eskimos and now it is offensive.

Well... Europeans called people from China "Chinese," so that is offensive. Chinese immigrants refer to themselves as "Jong Guo Ren" or literally "Chinaman."

So now we should call them Chinaman.

You sound like you're taking it very personally, is the galaxy they are ditching the nickname of the one you're from?

🤣 That’s a good one. I actually don’t like Socialist concepts of thought control. It’s nothing against NASA. I like the agency.

Just to clarify, are you equating nicknames for things being updated so as not to insult anyone with Socialist thought control?

Who's going to get insulted about planet's nicknames?

Oh, right. Crybaby shitlibs.

Basically, yes. The timing would seem to be suspicious. It is well known that controlling the language is part of changing the thoughts. History and linguistics are two basic targets to effect Socialist change(s) into a society.

Let NASA worry about exploring and officially documenting the universe and not worry about inadvertently offending someone (with non-scientific names btw). How much time & money needs be spent on it? The unofficial names help laymen identify certain objects and aren’t scientific. Someone is always offended by something which is another quandary.

Mars is a god of war - hey, that's violence!!
Venus is a goddess of love - assuming that love is feminine.
Jupiter was the king of the gods - did he have to be male???2?
Uranus - let's not go there!!!1!
Pluto - it's a dog, so it's offensive to Muslims and cat lovers.
Aldebaran - the name is close to Alderaan, which was blown up in an act of state terrorism.

;-)

Betcha, they'll find something, somewhere, to be offended about.

That is one of the points. You can’t get complete agreement on everything. Someone will claim some offense or other to one name or another until we are just chasing our tails instead of conducting the mission of space exploration.

It’s not in the release but it is in their name (Na’l Aeronautics and Space Administration) and their mission statement:

“Mission: Drive advances in science, technology, aeronautics, and space exploration to enhance knowledge, education, innovation, economic vitality and stewardship of Earth.”

"The timing would seem to be suspicious"

There is current discussion about racism, it is prompting organizations to evaluate their practices and you find that suspicious?

"History and linguistics are two basic targets to effect Socialist change(s) into a society."

That just doesn't make sense in this context, what you are referring to is the practice of controlling speech with the intended outcome that people cannot communicate their dissatisfaction with the governing body.
This is not impacting your freedom of speech at all, if they had been dropping a nickname that hadn't historically been used as a racial slur, would you care?

Are you complaining about it because you want marginalized people to continue feeling marginalized, are you scared about what might happen if we treat people equally and with respect?

Are you scared that you might end up being treated the way marginalized people have been?

“That just doesn't make sense in this context, what you are referring to is the practice of controlling speech with the intended outcome that people cannot communicate their dissatisfaction with the governing body.”

It actually goes far deeper than affecting one’s ability to redress grievances with one’s government. I think George Orwell’s “1984” covered it’s insidious nature (IIRC). Propaganda is another, similar construct.

Leave NASA to spending time and money on exploration and not chasing the least offensive informal names. You don’t have to like my opinion and I’m ok with that.
4 ups, 4y,

I was thinking of 1984 when I wrote that, have you read it?

It did cover its insidious nature, the Doublespeak in 1984 is nothing to do with updating nicknames so they are no longer racial slurs.

Let’s let NASA get on with their true mission.

Am I allowed to use the “E” word anymore? Or do I have to be a member of that group? Until you guys open all the re-education camps, people just won’t know.

"That group" being called Inuits?
2 ups, 4y,

Inuit is a racist generalization of indigenous people of Canada. "Inuit" is not accepted as a term for the Yupik and Chukchi ethnic group. So people need to stop using the word Inuit.

European is also a racist word, generalizing people from Europe. But calling someone a German is also a racist term as the Germanic people group varies from several different genetics and dialects. So German should not be used to describe a group of people let alone Europeans. That's just down right racist.

As a Korean American, I also do not like being referred to as Korean American b/c it is down right racist. Calling me a South Korean is also racist as Koreans in general SK are called Hanguk and NK are Choson. But calling me Hanguk is also racist, b/c Hanguk are divided into ethnic groups of Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla, and Gaya. That's just regional, linguistic and migration background separates our ethnicity even more.

So calling me Korean is racist. You will address me formally from my clan name, Gyeongju Gim.

Not to mention that "African" lumps together all people from a continent roughly the size of Europe and North America combined. So I guess we need to stop calling people "African Americans". :-)

"If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." - George Orwell

Science offends the politically correct because science lends itself to objective evidence and objective truth. Political correctness, however, lends itself to subjective perception, feelings, and the false claim that all cultures, religions, and political systems are equally good (with the possible exception of those that have been shown to work).

By making it a thought crime to say anything that may offend somebody, somewhere, at some unspecified time in the past, present, or future, they are making it a potential thought crime to say anything. Which is the most effective way to shut everybody's mouth.

It is only 'lumping them together' if you make a generalization about them.

"By making it a thought crime to say anything that may offend somebody, somewhere, at some unspecified time in the past, present, or future, they are making it a potential thought crime to say anything. Which is the most effective way to shut everybody's mouth."

It hasn't been made a thoughtcrime though and isn't going to be so that is hyperbolic nonsense.

Have you read any Orwell?

You know, I was JUST sitting here wondering whether it would be you or Antithesis who would first jump in to start an argument disguised as a discussion. And then you go and spoil my fun!

Is it not a thought crime if you are only breaking an "unwritten" law? It is, if breaking the law can have serious repercussions for your career and your life.

And that is the nice thing about unwritten laws - you don't know what the law says so those who make (up) the law can declare you a lawbreaker at their own discretion.

No hyperbole here.

Haha!

What do I win?

"Is it not a thought crime if you are only breaking an "unwritten" law? It is, if breaking the law can have serious repercussions for your career and your life."

The 'crimes' are things that threaten the authority of the governing body, not things that benefit the society. The things you are referring to arguably benefit society by avoiding anyone feeling excluded.

Who says you need to be a member of government to be a governing body? That would just be a handicap. You can wield power much more effectively if you don't wield it officially.

If you are just a "concerned citizen", or a group of them, you don't have to worry about a constitution guaranteeing free speech. You don't have to prosecute in court for violation of a law. You just accuse people of having said something "offensive" and watch them squirm and beg for forgiveness, because they risk losing everything by not caving in to your "hurt feelings".
1 up, 4y
"and watch them squirm and beg for forgiveness, because they risk losing everything by not caving in to your "hurt feelings".

Hah! They absolutely do not.

Breaking News: People that don't give a shit about offending others, don't give a shit about offending others.

If they pretend to, it's typically because they have an ulterior motive.
