Debating politics on social media is inherently an echo chamber. Who does change their mind? I haven’t really seen it.

As for me, I’ve changed my mind about plenty of things over the 15 or so years that I’ve been politically engaged. Having started my political journey as a libertarian Ron Paul supporter I’ve generally changed in a more liberal direction. However, when Trump won the election and was inaugurated I didn’t see that as a threat to civil society. It took a whole lot of f**k ups by him during his Presidency to get me to that point.

From Nov. 2019 (when I joined ImgFlip) to today, which is less than a year, I haven’t changed my mind about much.

But one thing that comes to mind is lockdowns. When businesses and institutions first started shutting down before large numbers of Americans were confirmed to have tested positive and barely any deaths had happened, I was freaked out because this was a truly unprecedented closure of society. And I made several memes about it from a “right-wing” perspective.

Over the following weeks as I learned more about Covid I changed my mind and in retrospect, I now understand why all that was necessary.

The vehement and ongoing objections to wearing face masks, even as society has begun to reopen, I truly don’t understand.

There’s just one leeeetle problem with that Sweden model talking point.

The data. Sweden’s lax approach to lockdowns turned out to be a bad one in comparison with its peers. And even this chart is a few months out of date. Where do you think the infection/death numbers in Sweden vs. other Nordic countries have gone since then? At this point, Sweden has become a case study in why lockdowns work and are necessary.

As for the fiat money, it’s another thing that at this time we need to stomach when stimulus is more necessary than ever. And even during normal times, it’s been persuasively argued that Gold-backed currencies strangle modern Information Age economies with an artificially constrained money supply. Another thing that caused me to move away from the kind of libertarianism Ron Paul peddles.

AOC’s a good candidate? I disagree. Far too polarizing and too inexperienced. The Democratic Party needs more young blood but not that young. Give me a Buttigieg or a Klobuchar any day over her.
