As "noodzakelijk kwaad" (a typical Dutch term, which literally means "necessary evil"). It's needed as some means of a tradable item is needed to get stuff, as money is universal. I mean, if I can offer you a nice computer program, but all you can give me back is plastic surgery I don't want, we got a problem. Thanks to money I can still lend my service to a plastic surgeon and he can repay me with something I can use to get the stuff that actually *is* useful to me.

Frankly I hate money. It attracts thieves, and it corrupts the minds of many people. It's just that a fluent way to trade cannot exist without it, that I deem it needed. If I can have enough to make sure I can pay my rent, my food, and the other stuff I really need, and then a bit more so I can sometimes have some fun, it will do. I don't need to buy a big mansion, where I have to hire people to keep it clean as it's to big for me to do myself alone. What do I need a private jet for?

It does what it has to do, and the cons actually outrank the pros, but sometimes its necessary to accept that there are more cons than pros, due there's more than just cons and pros to decide stuff on.

I will disagree with you on money being “evil”. I see money as being a tool to use, like a hammer or an axe. It’s an inanimate object, it has no feelings. It all depends on who’s using that tool, whatever their motivations are. I could use my money for good, like building a community center or a park, or for bad, like cocaine. It all depends on how you use the tool.

I just used a proverb. "Noodzakelijk kwaad" means literally "necessary evil", but what we actually means with it is something that we don't like, but which we merely need to accept. Due to the max character space these comment boxes have, I didn't go into the deep of that...

I second many of JeroenBrok's observations, but I'm a bit more bullish on money than he is. Money exists for the simple reason that it would be impossible to run a modern society without it.

The vast majority of pre-modern societies of a certain complexity had money as well. At a certain point, it becomes impractical to conduct all exchanges using tangible items like goats (or whatever), because not everyone wants to receive goats for their services, and goats are impractical to store and transport.

Coins made out of gold and other precious metals which had "real" inherent value were much more practical mediums of exchange, but even these coins had their limitations. Eventually, modern societies moved to paper money that was "backed" by gold or silver at the bank. And even more recently, all modern societies moved to a totally fictional, paper-money based economy that isn't "backed" by anything.

Now most transactions are done with the swipe of a card, a phone app, or even just the reorganizing of numbers on a screen.

I highly recommend this excellent YouTube series on The History of Paper Money.

I agree with the need in society, thanks for the thoughtful response.

All money is is a placeholder. Bartering can only get you so far, so you need some sort of placeholder to measure the value of what you can get. That’s money.

Its just something that gives me freedom of what to buy

I see money as an item that, if you have enough of, you can redeem it for something. You can get this item by doing certain things.

It's just how people get things. The Aztecs used to fricking use kids as currency, so the standards are low

To me it means living without the fear of not having enough food or not having a roof over my head.

It means my chance to pay off world leaders and gain ultimate power by promising unlimited money to them, and then changing the currency and nullifying the old one they have.

It's a medium to trade for goods and services.
