You do realize that these countries are not socialist, right?
If you have a legitimate plan to scale-up the Nordic model to a country the size of the US, then I'd be interested. Norway, for example, doesn't even have 6 million population. That's fewer people than live right here in the SF Bay area. And we all know how well our high tax rates and socialist policies have worked, right Nervous Nancy? (people are dying and OD'ing on the human filth covered streets in her district.)
Otherwise, I'd say that based on my visits, it seems that most of their happiness comes from living in a beautiful part of the world, and of course, getting a lot from their govt, including an incredible number of days off work each year, plus very generous parental leave. Of course there's the nearly free (to the patient) health care system, which means health care workers' incomes are controlled by their govt. That may not work in the US (said with sarcastic tone.)
So, how do they pay for all that? Let's say you earn about the equivalent of $100K US dollars in Norway. The govt effectively taxes you about 50% using a progressive tax scale, since you're a high earner. They also tax your employer at a rate of 60%. So, based on your $100K income, their govt receives $110K in taxes ($50K from you, and $60K from your employer.) Of course they have a high VAT as well. Also, it doesn't hurt that they primarily utilize hydro power for the majority of their electrical needs. As they should, when they have that much water.
But why do they need to tax their citizens so severely, when they're sitting on about $1 trillion in cash reserves, based on their sale of oil? Yes, the country that is outlawing the sale of cars that run on fossil fuel by the year 2025 is banking (as Carl Sagan never actually said) 'billions and billions' of dollars from the sale of climate changing oil. Hypocrisy isn't just the domain of the US govt and US politics.
The most obvious difference I see between Norway using the Nordic model, and the US potentially using the Nordic model, is that Norway isn't run by crazy lunatics, like we have here. Their govt actually spends money RESPONSIBLY. That is something that absolutely cannot be said about the US govt.
So, there are plenty of reasons why the Nordic model probably wouldn't work in the US, but like I said, if you have a good plan to scale up their system to work here, I'd be interested.
