No. Democrats of the "past" were Social Democrats. Around Kennedy and Carter they became more conservative. It came to a pinnacle around Bill Clinton's term as President but a major shift moved away from that during Obama's years.
Hence why during the W Bush administration you can see many people complaining that the differences between the two parties were "trivial"
The irony being, that the "far-left" are trying to revert back to Social Democrats like FDR to shake off the accusations of corruption and too much compromise left behind by the Clinton and Obama administrations respectively.
The Right only seem to get along with the Left politically when the Republicans made good Presidents and the Democrats made good Congressmen. Now, both sides only know how to play obstructionists so, if you'll forgive me for resorting to Sports analogy, it's like watching two football teams that are all defense but no real offense. There are no touchdowns, just field goal after field goal after field goal.
