Rights should never be determined by any immutable characteristic.

Well, the concept of rights is that no one can take them away from you. They’re not conditional.

Gays don’t get to marry because they somehow earned or deserve it. They get to do it because they’re human.

But are not the rights of us all guaranteed by the responsibilities we assume?

Some people focus in the deficiencies if equal right and certain groups, other focus on special treatment for those groups.

Usually they are groups of people who are pointing out that their equal rights are being violated for belonging to a specific group.

Perhaps the word "protections" would be more accurate. For instance, protection from discrimination in the work place. Also, there are some rights that are unique.
Women are able to get pregnant. Men cannot. That is not about rights, that is biology. But stemming from that biological fact, is the question about whether women have the right to get an abortion. Obviously, men don't have, want, or need the right to an abortion, because they don't have the ability to get pregnant.
Also, same sex marriage is a gay rights issue. However, if we erase gender from the equation, it is simply about the right of two people who want to get married, to get married. This is not necessarily a gay right. Straight people are allowed to have same sex marriages, but they lack the desire to do so.

I do not agree with the idea that a pregnancy belongs to a woman. Once she is pregnant, under the current system, she alone gets to decide whether or not he gets to be a father. Or has to pay child support. There is nothing equal about this.

I do agree about "gay marriage." The issue isn't sexuality. The question is whether getting married is a right thst Americans have. If yes, as the court ruled, gays have that right to.

That does not mean you get to have a big gay parade through everyone's living room. Nor a cake.
