I was too young to know any. One time round Times Square my pa said watch out for those people, they're bad. I think he thought they were Hippies, but from what I remembered, they looked like Bikers to me (when I got older I realized that...). Was probably after the Manson thing, altho in general regular folks didn't like em.
They seemed kinda constipated maybe? Some older leftovers I encountered over the years (very few) were phony with their love for humanity, even when they slathered on the Kumbaya trip. One 2nd gen one I worked with in the 80s was about all that but really all about himself. He had movie Jesus looks, so was born worshipping himself and his purdy blue eyes. He was cool till we disagreed, then turned dicky.
One of the Manson Family said that on account of her being Jewish with darker (Mediterranean) features, the regular Hippie crowd kind of rejected her, but Manson & Co welcomed her. If you notice, most of them were Anglo types, and generally monied too. Couple of token 'Black' friends to show how open minded they were plus the obligatory Chinese gf for one of their circle. Just like Hipsters today, only minus Moslems since there was only like 14,000 in the US back then, haha.
I have known Bronx PRs & 'Blacks' and whatnot from the gen, don't know if they were Hippie Hippies or just slightly imbued (it kinda leaked into everyone growing up then to some degree), and they had that rad attitude about gov't and how people should unite. Them folks were more genuine about that. Totally different head from the next gen in the ghetto. The older ones more serious about life and education and work and politics and society, the younger just hood rats.
When I was coming of age got into the Punk HC scene, which was also Hippie like in many regards. But then you'd see they were all in cliques and shut out outsiders, at least in NYC & Cali. In smaller towns that hardly had em, Punks, Skaheads, Goths, any on the fringe like that, they clung to each other. Goths here were the worst, models on parade. Interesting women to look at, but otherwise like shut up and go die already, ya stupid zombiez.
