Any group that has a core belief in putting their country and its people at the top of its priorities is patriotic by definition. That is not to say that other groups might find themselves within these spheres, which is where the confusion often emanates from. It's like you said, "fascist prey up their nation" from within nationalism or its symbols. That doesn't mean that nationalism or its symbols represent Fascism; much like how ISIS portrays itself as true Islam, but is only a faction within.
