The fight isn't about whether to keep government open, that's just silly talk.

he said he would never give in and open it without the wall. he did

I guess you missed the part where it was only a temporary spending bill that was signed. Another shutdown is coming in a month or so.

"The tentative deal includes $1.375 billion for physical barriers — a type of fencing that resembles the “steel slats” that Trump has specifically called for, according to a congressional aide briefed on the talks. It includes a total of 55 miles, which is just 9 miles shy of Trump’s last budget request." - Negotiators reach deal ‘in principle’ to avert shutdown, Politico

that deal was just made. a different deal was to open the govt back. my comment is outdated now I guess
0 ups, 6y
Yeah, but it was the same deal they gave him originally so we'll see if he signs it. If he does, he'll have been the one to have backed down and my meme would be the one that's outdated.

Are we talking about politicians? Or people that actually work for a living? Take the lobbying revolving door for instance. Or the Clintons, how they get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by some people just to make a speech.

The Clintons don't hold office. Just like the rest of them when retired (many who get ultra high paying jobs for the companies they legislated for), they can make money as they will, capitalism being a thing.
5 ups, 6y,

They DID hold office, they did some stuff that benefited some other rich people, and now they are getting paid off.

This isn't capitalism. It's government corruption.

In case you are wondering, there's basically three kinds of rich people:

1) Those that legitimately worked for their wealth.

2) Those that got it in some kind of windfall like inheretance or lottery.

3) Those that got it illegitimately, like through scams and abusing government.

So it's the case that the Clintons got their money from category 3, which also puts them in category 3.

People who are not in office are not obliged to the limitations such entails.

The free market allows them to do as they will within the confines of the law.

How does what you claim applies to retired officials does not apply to those IN office, such as Trump, whose wealth was acquired through your #2 & #3?

You're assuming that when rich people are rich, that automatically makes them greedy. Would you call Elon musk greedy? No? Then why would you call trump greedy?

Hasn't Elon Musk recognized the possibility of a future need of universal basic income (which he would no doubt be paying for in part with increased taxes)..?
Trump and his bros on the other hand have given permanent tax cuts to the rich, tried to cut Medicare, repeal Obamacare, trying to cut welfare, food stamps, etc.. I've also heard at least some of the people who have worked on Trump's projects in the past have gotten stiffed when it came time to pay.

I dont follow your logic. Im saying that people dont get rich because their greedy, they get rich because they're smart and make plans. Greed can be a par of that, but one cannot automatically assume that this is the case

your question: "Would you call Elon musk greedy? No? Then why would you call trump greedy?"
If I'm rich and greedy I would not favor raising my own taxes to provide for a universal basic income. I would favor lowering my own taxes by any means. Which seems to be exactly what Trump did. It was one of the first things he did. Also I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the majority of rich Americans today did not become rich because they were smart and made plans, they became rich because their parents were rich. (including Trump.)

Then you'd be falling off your limb.

Interesting article about income mobility. Looks like at some point over a span of 44 years, 12% of Americans income will reach the top 1% for more than 1 year.. but only 0.6% Americans will stay there for ten consecutive years.
But.... as far as I could tell this article was about income, not overall wealth.. and the Parent's wealth was not taken into consideration at any part. Good effort though.

wealth is gained by income. how do you think that inherited wealth was obtained in the first place? Do you really respect the people who gave birth to you so little you think that all their work should be for nothing when they die?

Or by having a good life plan. The biggest billionaires and millionaires don't waste money on giant houses or cool cars simply because that's wasteful. So, unless you are a Mr Kraus and just like to collect money, they aren't being greedy

Trump isnt one of the most courageous, great, relentless, and dedicated men. Thats BS. He may have some appeal and some decent politics, but he isn't courageous (draft dodging) or relentless (backing down on the shutdown).

Nobody said anything about being courageous, but you're wrong.

Trump is the only person to stand up to the Federal Reserve and the Deep State without caving.

JFK did it, got shot.

Reagan did it, got shot.

Trump has had multiple assassination attempts against him and he's still pushing his pro American agenda. Trump is the most courageous president we've had in decades.
1 up, 6y
Trump caved so hard last week, he could see Chiiiinuh.
0 ups, 6y
Arcmis said courageous. What do you mean by Deep State? Probably the a network of collusion between politicians, media, and corporations. Just because Trump isnt mainstream doesnt mean he isnt corrupt. How does he "stand up" to the Deep State? He confronted the Fed, but didnt do anything about it, because he doesnt have the power. Many politicians have the same views as Trump. Pushing it is hardly courageous. As far as assassination attempts, yeah right.
