We don't have telescreens, we have smartphones . They can be brought out anytime, anywhere. You don't need to be prosecuted by the government, persecution by the media can still ruin your life (people are regularly fired and thus deprived of the means of survival, because the media narrative of photos they we're in). The knowledge of this is adequate to keep most of the populace "in-line". Even if no one actually falls out of line, the media makes sure to regularly find people to make examples of, to ensure that we remain in fear, and do our best to stay "in-line". We are already living in 1984, but most of us don't even realize it.
