They split off the Union and formed The Confederate States of America and that's what caused the Civil War.

Most had been Democrats, but there were Whigs and Constitutional Unionists members as well. There were Democrats, Whigs, and Constitutional Unionists in the North also.

The Confederacy did not recognize political parties, so that negates your false claim.

But the Democrats did pass the Jim Crow laws in the south, fought integration, and were fighting against civil rights up to the 1960's. A hundred years after the civil war. We've come a long way baby.
