We called them goat's heads...I didn't see anyone else here call them that.

My 3year old daughter stepped on some in Billings MT, went right through her shoes into her feet, I had to throw the shoes away because there were spines broken off inside the foam soles.

Not just Texas. Grew up in the Mojave desert of California. We called them "goatheads" or more often than not " Owww Mother F'er"
