Harlan Sanders was born in Indiana 30 years after the Civil War ended, and never served in any military. He was appointed to the "Order of Kentucky Colonels" in 1935 as a commendation for his work in the hospitality industry.

Also, Kentucky was a Union state during the Civil War.
