Scientifically there are only two genders. If you were to die and decades later your bones were discovered, a coroner would be able to determine that you were born female or male. Anything else that you believe is a state of mind.

Then going purely by physical features, someone with CAIS would be female, even though they have male chromosomes. But I keep hearing people say it's the chromosomes that determine gender. Which is it?

Some people have a medical condition where they don't really fit into either category. People with CAIS, for example, appear completely female yet have male chromosomes, because during development the androgen didn't take effect. Some people are intersex. And some people have a physical body that doesn't match with their mental and emotional wiring. I'm not saying there are hundreds of genders, but to say there are only two excludes numerous people who don't fit into either completely male or completely female. Too many people think gender and sex are synonymous, only focusing on the physical side of it.
reply
7 ups, 1 reply
Are you describing Swyer Syndrome where an outwardly appearing female has internal gonads and never developed ovaries? I became aware of this a few decades ago, but don't personally know anyone like this.

There is another side of the coin, like you mention: those whose personalities don't match their genitalia. It goes back to the womb, when the expectant mother produces too many hormones? or testosterone during a key time in the baby's development. Too much estrogen in a developing boy will leave the child mentally female. Too much testosterone with a girl can cause a mentally male child.
reply
5 ups, 1 reply
I'm not familiar with that condition, but it might be similar to CAIS, or maybe another name for it. As far as the second paragraph, I'm not sure if that's what causes transgenderism. It very well could be; I just haven't heard that before.
reply
5 ups
I read about it in the early part of the century. The wrong hormones go to a developing fetus and bam, they take on the psychological aspects of the gender the hormones would normally do. I read a lot. :-D

Yes, it does sound a bit like CAIS. In layman terms, we all start out as a proto-female in the uterus, regardless of what we develop. The XX and XY chorosomes determine that. Somewhere in the second month, the gender characteristics develop. For an XY, it is like a switch gets flipped, making the boy a boy. For some reason, the switch doesn't trip. the gonads don't drop into position to set about the other female to male conversion. No willy, and the baby is born looking female. The difference is that the female has no ovaries. The gonads just stay up inside unless they are surgically removed. Common as they eventually develop tumors that can be life threatening.

Unfortunately, many don't want to view or understand the implications that occur from the prenatal, shall I use this term without offending other, birth defects.
reply
[deleted]
6 ups, 1 reply
Even with CAIS and intersex, gender is based off of male or female, it is just on a spectrum favoring one over the other. They are also considered conditions, and not to try to sound mean about it, abnormalities. To try to say that in order for someone to be considered a specific sex by being completely male or female, that would be like saying someone who doesn't have full mental capabilities should be considered something other than human. Really there really shouldn't be another gender unless they cannot fall into the gender spectrum.
reply
5 ups, 1 reply
But if someone is physically male but mentally and emotionally female, wouldn't that person still fall within the gender spectrum?
reply
[deleted]
4 ups
That is what I stated. They are still within the gender spectrum, which means one way or another they gravitate more towards male or female. It is not until they don't fall into the spectrum that we would have to consider other genders, life if they were capable of asexual reproduction.
reply
2 ups, 1 reply
This is something I can agree with, there can be genders aside from boy and girl based on their genetics, or males that feel more like girls, vice versa.
When you go around claiming one of the hundreds of other genders which aren't based on that and only based off of your personality, you have to realize gender isn't just a horoscope.
reply

I would somewhat agree. I'm not sure what you mean by the "personality" part.

Well, even biological sex isn't necessarily so simple as a binary. As far as Chromosomes go, you can be XX or XY, or in some cases, XXY, XYY or XXX. There are then even more possible combinations which tend to cause serious disorders, such as X, XXYY, XXXX, and XXXXX. But even when limited to people who are XX or XY, it's still potentially complicated; the biological "goal" of having XX or XY chromosomes is to determine whether a human body develops with masculine or feminine characteristics. But sometimes a given chromosome combination will fail to function properly, or sometimes there are genetic mutations which cause various hormonal insensitivities. As such, there are myriad different ways in which someone can have an even mix of male and female biological characteristics. But as things are now, to say that there are only two or more than two genders is essentially arbitrary. It's like determining what should or should not count as a planet, or what counts as a dialect vs a separate language. Until the minutia of genetics and epigenetics are better understood, what does or does not count as a gender is a mater of cultural orthodoxy and lexicography.
reply
[deleted]
6 ups, 1 reply
If you were to go and read my other comment, you would see where I talked about gender spectrum, that with gender spectrum no matter the chromosome pattern, everyone falls into a spot that would be considered more predominately male or female. To try to state that if all aspects of an individual it not 100% male or female then they must be something else, than that leaves an infinitesimal number of gender possibilities for each possible point within the spectrum. Until they no longer are capable of falling within the gender spectrum, then there can be talks of creating another gender, otherwise 1 way or another everyone gravitates towards being male or female.
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
Well, there's no scientific way to prove that someone who is on the fence is more so one than the other, and to say that people always "gravitate" towards one or the other in terms of gender identity simply isn't true; there are plenty of people who identify as completely neutral or agender. And you're right, if gender is to be treated only as a spectrum, then there is an infinite possible number of different genders, hence defeating any practical purpose of using gender terms in the first place. But to claim that there must be two and only two genders is based in social convention just as much as claiming there is more.
reply
[deleted]
3 ups, 1 reply
In many aspects of the scientific community, gender spectrum is used. It doesn't mean that they consider there to be a infinite possibility of genders, but that there are 2 and everyone falls somewhere within the spectrum with what would be like a percentage being either more male or female. Genetically and emotionally, people will gravitate more one way or another. There may be a very small percentage of the population that claim to be agender, but in all aspects they can be identified one way or another as male or female, either scientifically or emotionally. It would be impossible for someone to be considered exactly 50/50 neutral.

I am not going to get into another pointless "debate" with you. No matter what is said, you will find something to argue about because you think you need to be (or are) right about everything, and that anyone who disagrees with you (no matter at what level) you have to debate the issue over and over with. And right now, it seems you want to target me for some reason, and I am not going to allow that to happen. Goodbye.

As far as I am considered, your comment is too complex to give any type of simple answer, and to even address half of it would take about 5 or 6 different comments. Half of your questions would be like trying to explain to someone how 1+1=2 and not 1+1=3. First trying to define 1, 2 and 3 in such a way that it can only be uniformed for every single individual, then explaining how adding items together works, to then be able to get a standardized answer. To answer simply though about Bobbett, the entire time he was male. Just because it was cut off, that doesn't mean something else took it's place until it was replaced. Also genetically he was still considered a man and I would say with 99.99999999% certainty that he considered himself a male the entire time as well. As far as brain transplants, now you are trying to get into something even more complicated, complex, and unrealistic. 90% of your comment was that way. Your comment is so scattered, and even incomprehensible, that there is not point in even trying to process it any further.

if you answer the questions I pose, you'll note it's not so clear what gender anyone is, whether they have so called female or male bodies or not, is the theory anyway...I agree it is complex, as I stated, gender is, and so is trying to figure out anything for sure, whether it's unrealistic according to you or others or not the questions stand, awaiting answers, what if it did happen, for are you so sure it hasn't, and are you so sure it never will, and whether it ever does or not, what if it did, what gender would the people be in the new bodies? if any gender? what makes gender? who defines it? specifically what makes someone male and someone female, especially if bobbett without that one part remained a man, what besides that part indicates maleness? according to many, lots of stuff does, testosterone production in certain quantities, etc...but women produce testosterone and grow beards and fight in wars and lift weights and everything men do, except what, can anyone fill in the blank? except what? name anything men only do, or that if you do it means you're a man, or a woman, either way. people wanting the issue to be clear or cleared up or easy to decipher doesn't mean it is. it's not so clear as there are two genders, for various reasons. it is indeed seemingly incomprehensible, whether I write about the subject in my way/s or not. no one out there is proving their position correct. its squabbling, and wishful thinking, but no one can or has laid out the exact criteria for what it means to be man or woman. does that mean there are no such things? im not saying that. im saying no one has laid out the criteria for what male means or female, or what traits or things one must possess or be to qualify as male or female, and that being said, it's not hard to speculate there may be no or more than two genders etc, at least as far as we know. as to the Truth on how many genders there are, who knows? most folks think they do, but who Truly KNOWS?
reply

Here I will answer these as simple as possible, as to not waste any more of my time. Complete brain transplants are theoretically impossible as detached nerves from the spinal cord to the brain cannot be reattached, which means the complete nervous system of the body would no longer function and the body would die. So regardless of what you see from science-fiction movies, this isn't even worth exploring any further because it is not going to happen.

"specifically what makes someone male and someone female" #1- DNA #2- physical features then #3 the brain. There is genetic coding that is different for both male and females. Yes there are some conditions in which a female body ends up with male DNA and visa versa, but these are rare instances, and it isn't 100% of one and 100% of the other. Science can use a gender spectrum to measure the amount of gender someone has in all 3 aspects to be able to show which would be considered the dominant gender.

"name anything men only do, or that if you do it means you're a man, or a woman, either way" To make it simple, a genetically identified female is capable of naturally bearing a child, where a male is incapable. So if you was to go off of the gender concept, not including any diseases, medical conditions, or anything else, a 100% woman could be defined as someone who has 100% female DNA, 100% woman brain patterns, and is capable of bearing a child, and a 100% male could be defined as someone who has 100% male DNA, 100% male brain pattern, and is not capable of bearing a child. Everyone else would fall somewhere within the spectrum and would gravitate towards one or the other more. The only way for another gender to be able to be considered would be if some humans started being able to reproduce asexually.

To ask a simple yet complex question, if genders were taken out completely, how would we teach the reproductive system to kids?

Now I don't have hours upon hours to go into even greater details on your questions to explain to you not only how and why they are stupid, but how insignificant they are in determining gender.

If you think this common knowledge needs sources, then how about yoh provide sources to show that it isn't true. How about you orovide sources for anything you have said? No point in me wasting any more time on you, when all you want to do is throw out impossible what if scenarios and say that we beed to prove what it would or wouldn't do. and the brain question was about the future as well...in the future if they get asked after the brain transplant what gender they are, what gender will they be, regardless of their opinion on the subject. you don't know, so you don't guess. you'd prefer to say it'll never be possible thereby dodging facing that it wouldn't be exactly clear if they were women or men at that point. no one forced you to answer the questions, and you're entitled to your opinion, but that's all it is as far as anyone else can tell...it's not proof of correctness.

that question you ask about aliens is a fair one, what if? it would have its own ramifications. you said you were done before as well, should I believe this time you're actually done, or can I expect you to write me back yet again after this comment? what if questions are important and can help to clarify issues at times, or at least point out how difficult certain questions actually are to answer. I didn't say I was offering proof of anything, I pointed out that you don't offer proof with your opinions, and that no one else does either. most like you don't mention their sources and those who do don't prove their sources are correct. your opinion of me doesn't change any of that. you're free to hate me all you like, not skin off my back. my questions stand, the debate yet rages on twixt millions of guessers, and freedom of speech and ideas in open forums like this are still both welcome by some and rejected by others. so be it.

there's dodging questions and there's answering them. attempting to answer them gets humanity a lot further, is the theory anyway, even if they remain unanswerable, or if not that, then so far unanswered, along the way. for example, though my comment was perhaps largely incomprehensible to you, it won't be to every one. many will get just where im coming from and will dare to answer the questions in their minds, and will wrestle with the concepts therefore. like how many folks struggle with the question, if you knew killing one person would save a thousand lives in the next ten seconds, would you kill that person whether said person was a stranger or not, only in this case, it's about trying to figure out if gender is real, and if so, how to tell who is which for SURE.

And if you read what I stated, it would take 5 or 6 comment blocks to even start trying to touch on part of your questions. Let alone with how scattered they are, there is absolutely no good method to use to even try answering them with. Maybe if you learned how to properly propose questions, then we can talk. With so many "what if" scenarios you are trying to pose, you are purposefully wanting to make it complicated. It is not me trying to dodge your questions, it is I don't think you understand the complicity in answering "what if" questions and the number of hours to sit back to try to answer them, let alone how many pages it would take to even get started.

there you didn't dodge them this time, you attempted to answer them, most of them anyway, but what happened was you threw out guesses and offered no proof that your guesses were right. you saying what you said doesn't prove you were right about any of your claims. the questions aren't stupid, questions don't have intelligence at all; there are simply smart or stupid responses/answers to the non-intellectual non-dumb questions. your opinion doesn't stand out from anyone else's insofar as likely being true goes because like others you preach without proof, you just state what you think the answer should be or is and you don't go about showing how indeed your answers are correct. theoretically impossible as far as you know doesn't prove impossibility; brain transpositions have either been done, or they will be in time, and if they have and or when they become reality, someone will ask the people afterwards, 'which gender are you' and regardless what they answer, the question will still remain, for what does their guess have to do with what gender they are? it's either the brain or the body that decides gender most people figure, but so what to what most people figure? not everyone agrees. you are guessing and hoping to stand out as right in this debate which is way beyond you, and me, and anyone so far who is out there guessing without proving, just like you just did. it's what every one's doing, except for those who admit they just simply don't know. so thanks for guessing, but I'll be over here holding out for proof, as usual, as guessers like you keep on preaching and preaching and preaching without teaching a single thing.
