Basic decency and humanity is rooted in religious morals. At least they are in the faith I follow. Religious people aren't always the ones judging others. In my experience, we get more judgement and scrutiny than non-religious people because higher moral standards are expected of us. It all comes down to your personal point of view.

This is a "which came first" type conundrum. My personal view is that basic decency and humanity came before religious morals. I don't think those under the scrutiny of, say, the inquisition, or those who were being burned at the stake as witches, or those who have been killed for being atheists, would neccessarily agree with your anecdotal experience. No offence. by the way, I'm Catholic.

Well, according to the Holy Bible, God taught religion to Adam and Eve so I'd say religious morals came first.
People have committed sin in the name of religion for centuries. Just look at how Christ had to correct the Jews who misinterpreted His commandments. But you can't blame these wrongs on religion. There has been mich more crimes against humanity in the secular world than in the religious world.
