I'm on the west coast, and we say soda here. Pop just sounds weird.

I'm in New York. We say soda,too

"Hey do you wanna go to the store and get some pop?" (To which I go, 'no, because you sound like a nerdy dude from the 50s.')

vs.

"Let's go to the store and get some soda (or specific brand works better)." And then there's no confusion on what it is you want to go buy.

I have a few friends from places like the deep south, and they call all pop "Coke". It's just a thing. It truly is amazing just how different we all are.
