Yeah, I joined about a month ago and I got 100k points pretty fast by leaving funny (I laughed) comments/meme comments on the front page memes and on the newest ones. Plus, leaving good comments will make people more likely to check out your profile ;D

Ok, obviously people are more likely to comment on memes in the Hot pages, or on popular user's memes, if they want their comments to be seen. When you get a meme on the front page, it's likely to get comments.

Yup, it does. There's no set formula (how many points you get per comment) because obviously people still have to upvote it, but in general, it's the easiest way to get your humor seen on imgflip.

There's no submission limit on meme comments, and you can just put them on the front page straight away, without making a meme and waiting/hoping for that meme to get there.

One thing I have tried that works is going through both Hot and Latest categories and going crazy upvoting almost everything. It's not as fast as commenting, but upvoting plus making more comments got me 7000+ points in the past two days

Class envy is indoctrinated in the population and it comes seeping out like a bad septic system in your lawn, even on imgflip.
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
Actually it kind of is. If you're on the leaderboard chances are at least a few people will click on your name and upvote some of your memes.
reply
2 ups
Yes, you're right that being more well-known on the site will probably get you more views (and obviously the more views a person gets, the more opportunity to be upvoted - people can't upvote what they never see).

But that's not what you said at all. You said "everyone automatically upvotes their memes and they always get front page," which is something very different.

If a well-known user makes a meme people don't like, people aren't going to automatically upvote it anyway just because the user is well-known.

But yeah. If you are good, you get popular here. That may give you a couple free looks for a while. But to STAY on top you have to be a giver to the community. A contributor who sets tone. Otherwise in the image flip news cycle you get lost if you aren't consistently a stud.

That is called "real life", not imgflip.

Can't argue with that logic
reply

It's not logic. It isn't based on sound reasoning. It's just a myth. It might resonate with people emotionally because it gives them an apparent explanation for why their memes didn't get as many views or upvotes as they wanted, but it isn't true.

There, there. Some people just have a way with memes.

Once your name is famous people will like any shit you make. I your name isn't famous even quality memes get 5 likes...It's the same in business I guess.

That's not the correct formula.

Once your name is well-known (which you can get by being consistently active on the site in a way that people like) then your memes will probably get more views, and all other things being equal, a person who has more views will have more upvotes than someone with fewer views.

But there's no auto-upvotes to speak of. If a well-known user makes a meme nobody likes, people won't 'upvote it anyway' just because of the user who made it.

I don't know if there's any guarantees to that.

I wrote in the comment "by being consistently active on the site in a way that people like," but ultimately nobody can predict what things people will and won't like.

If you have a good sense of humor and are able to make funny meme comments where other people see them frequently, I would say that would give you a good shot, but like I said, no guarantees.

It's worked for me, though. I like making meme comments, and I try to make them funny, and it's gotten me whatever recognizability my username has on imgflip, and points along the way. :)

But the more important question is not how, but why.

The points are worthless outside the context of imgflip itself, and being well-known on a site has cons as well as pros (some people will praise you, but some will attack you). For me, "becoming well known" isn't worth it as a goal on its own.

I'm not saying it's bad to want points (if you're going to be on a website you might as well participate to the full), but my advice would be to try to do it in such a way that your time on the site is fun for you whether you get well known or not.

For me personally, it's more that I want to make memes people like, and its hard to get that fulfillment when not that many people see your posts.
reply
2 ups
Yeah, I think I know what you mean. That's why I started putting meme comments on front page memes (because my memes weren't getting views). It seems like people generally don't mind meme comments on memes when they're funny and they aren't about "come upvote my meme" or something unrelated to the post etc.

If your meme doesn't do well and it's a good meme, just post it again a day or 2 later at a different hour until it takes. That's what I did with my current front page meme /shrug

If you are here seeking points, you might want to listen to what Socrates is telling you. Increase your comments and comment a lot more on the front page memes. Whenever your comments get upvoted it's something like 30-40 points for each upvote. That's how the majority of points come on this site.

Lol that's funny, but I'm not a master. It's just that I happen to enjoy making meme comments more than memes, and I've seen the effect it has on my points.

And there's exceptions to the rule - for example, Entertainer28 was at the top of the site for a long time, and he doesn't comment much. But it worked for me.
