I'm also Atheist, but Jesus did not talk about the Roman welfare state, but your personal deeds toward individuals. About taxes he said "Give the Emperor what is his, and God what is his".
But I'm kinda like Bernie Sanders anno 2014: I believe in the Nation state. To me that means a welfare system's right to survive through necessary limitations. It has to have clear spending priorities to keep succeeding.
I'm closer aligned with the policies of slightly older moderate Liberal parties of the west which Fetterman and Bill Maher represent, than the current destructive Marxist ones. I've been a Communist too 25 years ago, but left the entire radical left to become undefined for about a decade, cos I couldn't see other than destructive consequences when fully attempted no matter how I twisted it. Plus wasn't totalitarian enough to go "just" Socialist.
Being mainly pragmatic sucks...
