Hogan means: "dwelling."

Hogan means: "dwelling." | Made from earth & wood, the hogan is based on the first Navajo dwelling, built for them by Beaver & Coyote. A form of sacred architecture, the Hogan represents the universe. Like the homes of wild bees & some birds, the entrance faces East to accept the warmth of the rising Sun. Support logs are raised towards the north, south & west sides of the building. Besides stabilizing the structure, they represent female, male and two spirit (non-binary) energy. Mud & pieces of wood make up most of the structure, with some crystals embedded for spiritual protection. Don't do the "tomahawk chop" at sporting events. | Tomahawk is an Algonquin word meaning "striking weapon," yet the chopper which now bears that name was not created by Red People. We weren't doing a lot of metal work centuries ago. It's essentially a small European battle-ax that was marketed to us--thus the name. In movies it tends to be thrown around, but that's not how it was really used. Like a war club or sword, you keep it in your hand constantly. Appropriation. | Sultan Mkwawa was leader of the Hehe nation in Tanzania. When Germany came to colonize them, they fought back. The Germans won, captured Mkwawa, executed him & sent his skull back home as a trophy. Naturally, the Hehe want it back. They even convinced the British to make it a clause in the Versailles Treaty (ending World War 1) that the skull must be returned.
