Tomahawk is an Algonquin word meaning "striking weapon," yet the chopper which now bears that name was not created by Red People. We weren't doing a lot of metal work centuries ago. It's essentially a small European
battle-ax that was marketed to us--thus the name. In movies it tends to be thrown around, but that's not how it was really used. Like a war club or sword, you keep it in your hand constantly. Throwing away your melee weapon is not a winning move.
